Trump's 'America first' speech alarms U.S. allies

Donald Trump's first major foreign policy address alarmed American allies, who view the Republican front runner's repeated invocation of an "America first" agenda as a threat to retreat from the world.

While most governments were careful not to comment publicly on a speech by a U.S. presidential candidate, Germany's foreign minister veered from that protocol to express concern at Trump's wording.

"I can only hope that the election campaign in the USA does not lack the perception of reality," Frank-Walter Steinmeier said.

"The world's security architecture has changed and it is no longer based on two pillars alone. It cannot be conducted unilaterally," he said of foreign policy in a post-Cold War world. "No American president can get round this change in the international security architecture.... 'America first' is actually no answer to that."

So you think pulling out of NATO for whatever reason is not isolationist at some level? Really? Are you serious?

What is your definition of isolationism?

I'm not all over the place at all. You said to give you one time where Trumpy even HINTED at isolationism. I said NATO and you said he never hinted we might leave NATO. Now you're saying we might and Trumpy would be right to leave based on a given set of facts.

So... we agree, he did hint that we might leave NATO.

The issue seems to remain whether it is isolationist to do so for whatever reason?

There are those among us that will never say anything good about Trump no matter how right he is. The time has come for Europe to foot the bill for it’s own security (actually over due.) I don’t care if some will call that isolationism or the like. The time has also come to stop spilling American blood for those who oppose our culture, country or self interests. The time has also come to remove those who disagree from power through our elections.

What is your definition of isolationism?

Well... here's the dictionary definition. " the policy or doctrine of isolating one's country from the affairs of other nations by declining to enter into alliances, foreign economic commitments, international agreements, etc., seeking to devote the entire efforts of one's country to its own advancement and remain at peace by avoiding foreign entanglements and responsibilities. "

Do you think my definition would be better, worse, or about the same?

How old are you?

Let's try this:
Isolationism is a category of foreign policies institutionalized by leaders who asserted that their nations' best interests were best served by keeping the affairs of other countries at a distance.

If the US enters into a treaty with another country or countries and those other countries do not adhere to the terms of the treaty then pulling out of the treaty is not isolationist. It is justice.

Using your definition, then no, breaking a treaty that has been broken by the counter-signatories is not isolationism.

And no, Trump has never advocated that definition of isolationism.

do not adhere to the terms of the treaty then pulling out of the treaty is not isolationist. It is justice.

LOL.... Justice is anything that a person believes is RIGHT? It's the Eye for an Eye thing.... isn't it?

You guys are funny. In a good way... sorta.

You have to decide I we're better off being part of NATO, even if we spend more... and being part of that organization of countries, or if we're better withdrawing because of economics that are about .00009% of our budget.

It's not about dollars and sense. It's isolationism and it's all part of the carnival act to woo voters.

And it works in certain segments.

You can justify anything in the world by calling it “justice.” Right?

Look for a whole series of these types of articles and comments coming from Western Europeans and their commentators. They do not like being threatened with being removed from the gravy train and having to pull their own weight. You know a candidate is doing something right when Western Europe is squawking about him.

A socialist Kraut who know that the American “Money TIt” is going to be shutting down next year. Basically, America, with our “foreigh aid,” has allowed this cadre of POS European members of NATO to finance their welfare states through the use of American money. By not having to pay their fair share for their own defense, they’ve been able to divert their own tax revenues to their gibbsmedats!

It’s not isolationism... it’s justice. It’s not revenge, it’s justice. It’s not anger, it’s justice. It’s not uncompassionate... it’s justice. Nothing is what it is as long as I think my response is “justice.”

If we'd followed the lead of Patrick J. Buchanan the last 2+ decades, we wouldn't be in the mess we're in. We've got a second chance with Donald J. Trump.

Regardless---I thought you guys, Globalists (Presumptive North American Union President Cruz supporters) were gone. Very disappointing. It was sure nice reading FR without feeling like a shower was necessary after reading posts like yours.

I can respect your post. If you favor isolationism and just come out and say it... I totally respect it. I may disagree with it, but I respect your opinion.

If you favor isolationism, and then argue that it isn't isolationsism..... it's just "justice." Well... how can anyone respect that?

I'm not an isolationist. I don't believe in just sitting on the sideline. Not in world politics, not in local politics, and not in my personal life. Sorry if I offend you.

Our “allies” expect us to sign up for shared responsibilities and obligations with the expectation that the Ameican taxpayer will be enslaved to pay for it all by ourselves! Some friends.

Sorry euro-leeches, the American public is just not that into you anymore. For politeness sake I would like to say that it’s a problem with us and not you but, it’s you.

The Cruzers are trying to change the meaning of the word, “Conservative” (e.g., to include open borders, unlimited immigration, resettlement of Muslims into the USA by the millions, etc.); now this brainiac tries the same with “Isolationism.”

Prior to Obama, America first was the rule.(not done well, but the rule nevertheless)

No, what bothers them is that under Trump they will have to pay a share if they expect to get American help.
