Recent discussions within Los Angeles labor groups reveal inherent hypocrisy within the Fight for $15 campaign. Unions paid plenty of lip service toward this effort, which would raise the minimum wage to $15. The Los Angeles City Council is considering a measure that would raise the citys minimum wage to $15 by 2020, and this month California Governor Jerry Brown signed a law raising the states minimum wage to $15 by 2022. It seems that unions should be celebrating this supposed win for workers yet union leaders are currently seeking an exemption to the $15-an-hour minimum wage for union members.
Yes, you read that correctly. Champions of the Fight for $15 movement appear to be getting what they fought for, except now they want no part of it. Los Angeles labor leaders make the argument that, if unionized businesses are exempt from the minimum-wage law, they can have the freedom to negotiate better terms for workers (which might include lower hourly pay but other benefits, like healthcare and vacation time).

More hypocrisy.
“yet union leaders are currently seeking an exemption to the $15-an-hour minimum wage for union workers”
Well, naturally. Shouldn’t UNION workers be exempt from the rules and laws that apply to we little people?
It’s not hypocrisy. It is gamesmanship. If union shops are exempt, then they hope that some businesses will actively seek to become unionized. The unions are probably prepared to negotiate contracts which extend sub-$15 minimum wages for some period beyond 2022.
It is hypocrisy. They couldn’t care less about the workers they pretend to represent. They only want to take their money.
They obviously want to encourage the hiring of more union workers.
You could staff your place w/non union folks at 15 per hour, or union folks @7.
If they get their way, I hope someone has the gumption to file a lawsuit claiming the 15 is arbitrary and capricious.
Amazing

You got this totally right. I was thinking the same thing.
