A bill headed to Oklahoma Gov. Mary Fallins desk this week would strip abortionists of their medical licenses and basically outlaw abortions in the state.
The bill describes an abortion as unprofessional conduct and prohibits Oklahoma medical licensure officials from renewing or granting licenses to doctors who do abortions, except to save the mothers life, according to the Washington Post. The state House passed the bill on Thursday in a strong, bipartisan vote; and the Oklahoma Senate passed it in March, LifeNews reported.
Oklahoma state Sen. Nathan Dahm, who sponsored the measure, said the purpose is to protect unborn babies lives. Abortion activists are threatening to challenge the measure, but Dahm and state Rep. David Brumbaugh, who co-sponsored the measure in the House, staunchly defended the legislation.
Do we make laws because theyre moral and right, or do we make them based on what an unelected judicial occupant might question or want to overturn? The last time I looked, thats why I thought we had a separation of power, Brumbaugh said. Its not about policy. Its not about politics. Its about principle.
A few pro-abortion lawmakers spoke out against the bill prior to the vote. Heres more from the report:
Several Democrats, outnumbered roughly 2-to-1 in the House, pushed back against the bill in debate on Thursday, suggesting it was misguided and unconstitutional.

Rep. Emily Virgin (D) asked the bills House co-sponsor Rep. David Brumbaugh (R) about a statement from the Oklahoma State Medical Association, which said it took no position on abortion but did oppose the legislation on the grounds that it overrode physician judgment.
We already have a severe physician shortage in Oklahoma, so are you at all concerned about physicians leaving Oklahoma if this bill becomes law, Virgin asked.
Brumbaugh said he didnt expect it to have an effect on doctor retention because it only affects those who perform abortions. Theres no way that this will impact the medical community, and weve checked through that, he said.
Fallin, who is pro-life, has not indicated whether she will sign the bill, Reuters reports. She faces intense pressure to reject the bill from national pro-abortion groups including Planned Parenthood and the Center for Reproductive Rights, Breitbart reports. On Saturday, Planned Parenthood attacked the Oklahoma legislators on Twitter:
The Center for Reproductive Rights, a New York-based abortion group, is threatening to file a lawsuit if the measure becomes law. Unfortunately, abortion activists legal challenges could succeed in overturning the legislation.
The U.S. Supreme Court ruled in Roe v. Wade that states cannot restrict a womans so-called right to abortion. Given the current U.S. Supreme Court justices records, the Oklahoma legislation likely would be struck down and Roe upheld. After the recent death of pro-life Justice Antonin Scalia, the high court is more likely than ever to strike down pro-life laws.
Because of Roe, American abortion laws line up with human rights abusive countries like China and North Korea in their permissiveness of abortion. The U.S. is one of four countries in the world to allow late-term abortions for any reason. Most other countries have laws restricting or banning abortion. The deadly decision has allowed more than 58 million unborn babies lives to be unjustly taken in the past 43 years.
Roe, a decision made by nine male justices in 1973, stands in the way of life-protecting laws that most Americans support. Thats why overturning the deadly decision Roe v. Wade has been a key strategy of pro-life groups for decades.
I live in Oklahoma. From anywhere in Oklahoma you can be in another state in about 3 hours. No one’s perceived right to an abortion is being denied. Oklahoma is just choosing not to do them.
“A man rapes a woman and the baby gets the death sentence without a trial. That seems fair. /s”
That’s what I’ve been complaining about.
I no sooner post about a 3 year old here in WV getting an STD from some 25 year old and you all want to hang him by the nearest tree? Where is that same attitude when it comes to this? If a 12 year old is raped in the women’s bathroom by a 25 year old man then he should get the death penalty. No talk of abortion for her we need to get her justice. Give him a fair trial while others are weaving the rope to hang him at dawn if found guilty. End of story.
You agree?
Oklahoma is just choosing not to have that evil in their mists.
That’s my opinion too.
When and where I grew up in the 50s guys that raped children got sort of lost out in the woods somewhere. They didn’t show up for work their car was at home but they weren’t there and were never heard of again.
As for babies from rape. They are innocent like all babies. If their mother doesn’t want them after she sees them then put them in an orphanage for adoption.
You are ok with having a 12 year old carry a rapists sperm in her body? Not to mention the dangers of having a 12 year old raped child carry a pregnancy into full term. You all seem to not know what happens when a person is raped and they show up to the ER. They get a forensic nurse or a trained ER physiciain to perform the rape kit. They then get handed the morning after pill in which they ingest just a few hours after the rape. They dont even know if they are pregnant or not from the rape, they take the pills anyway.
Would you like your 12 year old child to carry a rapists pregnancy into full term?
All I can say is our side can do boycotts, and we have far greater numbers.
Same thing just about all advocavy groups do.
You misread me.
>Same thing just about all advocavy groups do.
True. I suspect, if one were to give a donation of a few $M, on the condition they went to court (fight against the Left), they’d turn it down...
——Given the current U.S. Supreme Court justices ——
by the time it makes it to SCOTUS, there will be nine at the bench
So then under this law, if there is an exception for rape or life of the mother then would the person performing the abortion under those circumstances still lose their license? And if they do then shouldn't the doctor who recommended the abortion lose their license as well? If performing an abortion is unprofessional conduct then recommending one should also be unprofessional conduct as well.
>Rape/Life of mother. Those would be *my* ONLY exceptions.
>>So then under this law, if there is an exception for rape or life of the mother then would the person performing the abortion under those circumstances still lose their license? First off, the one performing the procedure SHOULD be a doctor, in a medical facility
1) If the exemptions exist in the law, how could one penalize another for performing said procedure? Not as if the ‘mother’ can do it herself. We’re not talking about FORCING a doctor to perform here.
2) Unprofessional...Performing vs. recommending? I don’t see how the two equate. You saying a recommendation (say, a legal procedure in one country, but illegal in another, so fly to the ‘legal’ country) the same as DOING...where’s it’s illegal?
“I’m tight on $$”. “Well, you can always rob a bank”. “Ha, what a hoot.” = jail??
