Not really. The priestly and ruling classes have been fleecing and controling the gullible and powerless for at least 10,000 years. In that time how many gods have gone by the wayside? 25,000? 50,000? Conservative estimates to be sure. Today there are 3-4 thousand belief systems in play. They can't all be true. When an old system no longer becomes profitable it's cast aside or re-purposed and a new one takes it's place.
