John Kasich has enough delegates that he can probably put Donald Trump over the top if Trump doesn't win the Republican presidential nomination on the first ballot at the party's convention in Cleveland this summer.
That's reason enough for Trump to put the Ohio governor on his ticket. In fact, he would do well to magnanimously throw the vice presidential nomination open to the convention with the knowledge that his own delegates would secure the spot for Kasich.
But pure palace intrigue is the least of the reasons that the GOP front-runner should run with Kasich. The governor comes from a swing state that Republicans must win to take the presidency, he has crossover appeal with Democrats who watched the Republican debates and mistakenly thought he won every one, he's got both executive and legislative experience and, most important, his selection would signal to both the establishment wing of the GOP and the general electorate that Trump is serious about governing.

So, if we don’t like Trump, we are banned?
He’s going to start out down by quite a bit. A two point bump in Ohio isn’t going to do it. He will need a game changer VP pick. A competent Sarah Palin. I’d look to women CEO’s if I were him.
What I don’t get is why would anyone want to be VP? It’s a do nothing position.
Think the bridge to Carly has been burned...
It would fit in with Sanders’ philosophy of collecting a government check for breathing.
Stepping stone for a future Presidential run.
I don’t see Carly accepting. She just doesn’t seem the type to be explaining that what Mr Trump meant when he called the congresswomen sweetheart was not in fact condescending, and Mr Trump actually has the greatest respect for women. No, I don’t see Carly taking on that role.
I said 3 months ago he would pick Rubio.
I hope Rubio would decline but who the heck knows in politics.
I have lots of politically active friends in Ohio and they voted for Kasich as a stop-Trump move.
Not all of them but there was a very strong group who did just that.
Maybe Trump isn’t as avid about the wall as his supporters believe.
Kasich seems like a horrible choice but who knows what Trump would do to secure the nomination.
If he picks a politician, Rubio does make good sense.
Would he take it? It would be a tough choice. He’s out of a job come January, but signing on to potentially the biggest loss in 50 years would be a tough decision, and there would be the constant fear to becoming part of a joke if Trump says one stupid thing too many.
If I were advising him, I’d say don’t do it, but Rubio is pretty ambitious so it’s hard to turn down a VP chance.
Damn right K-sick is the enemy. Those of us who KNOW him here in Ohio do not want him to be Trump's VP. #NeverK-sick!
No Kasich!! HELL no Kasich!!
Ohio? Ohio has voted for every Republican that’s ever won. Kasich is not needed. If Ohio goes dem then it won’t be the difference anyway.
Just recruit Hillary! or Bernie to run with Trump; then you'll be assured of a "win". I knew it wouldn't take long for the "Kasich is a really good choice" crowd to arrive.
I kind of thought that’s how my comment might end ... OK then ... don’t have to think about that one anymore.
K-sick. That’s crazy talk.
I would take Rubio over either Cruz or Kasich. However I think there are better VP choices for Trump. The only reason to take Cruz or Kasich would be if that is the only way he can be President.
No.
I specifically said I hadn't given it much thought, and I attempted no strong argument for it.
Thanks, youve convinced me that we are in topsy-turvey world. Kasich is good if Trump chooses him!
