His history with the gay community is a long one. He donated to charities focused on the AIDS crisis in the late 1980s and early 90s. In 2000, when he briefly considered running for president, he gave an interview to The Advocate, a gay magazine, in which he supported amending the 1964 Civil Rights Act to include a ban of discrimination based on sexual orientation.
It would be simple. It would be straightforward, Mr. Trump said in the interview, adding, Its only fair.
Sixteen years later, gay rights advocates are still trying to persuade Congress to pass a similar measure, but they have struggled to win support, especially from Republicans. The last Republican nominee, Mitt Romney, opposed similar legislation in 2012.
Mr. Trump declined to be interviewed for this article.
His ease with gay people does not seem to be the result of deep soul searching, but, rather, the product of the Manhattan social and political world he has inhabited the past five decades.
I live in New York. I know many, many gay people. Tremendous people, Mr. Trump said in an interview in 2011.
He has been playful at times, such as in 2000, when he and Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani appeared in a skit for a political roast, during which Mr. Trump nuzzled and caressed the mayor, who was dressed in drag.
Friends say he also views gay rights through the lens of a bottom line-minded businessman.
His key concern is, Are you capable and able to do the job I hired you for? And if you are, very little else matters, said Abe Wallach, an openly gay executive at the Trump Organization in the 1990s.

Trump , cruz etc are never perfect, hell and when it comes to social issues I am a conservative. trump needs a back bone and tell cross dressers to use their own locker rooms.
cruz takes money off a homosexual; activist businessman from TX, yet another sell out.
I’m sick of anyone who is running , why the hell can’t we get a decent person who believes in borders, believes in normal marriage, using own locker rooms, no trade deals which hurt us .
No doubt it will come, the question is: from the Chinese, the Russians, or the muslims?
I look at this the same way I looked at Ann Coulter's other favorite, Willard. The reason why I "pulled the lever" in November was not a vote for Willard, but complying with the mandate to do everything possible to keep Obungo from a second term in office.
Unfortunately, Willard was Willard and defeated himself. Hopefully The Donald won't make the same mistakes.
“Trump is the most conservative electable candidate. Hopefully his views on this subject will have evolved.”
I respect and thank you for your honesty. Too many Trump supporters keep repeating his lies.
If he had been honest with us, and said what you just said, that he doesn’t agree with us on everything but we agree on the big issues, I would happily be working to get him elected.
The liberals don't seem to think it will. I think their being convinced it can't happen is going to insure that it does.
How about from you?
Even if there is a 1 in 1,000 chance that he will govern conservatively on 1 out of 100 issues, that’s better than dealing with the Hildabeast.
Or support the guy that’s been conservative his entire life....went to the senate and did the things he said he would do.......
I’ll vote for Donald if I have to but jeesh you people have fell for a fraud
Well, if you want to get personal (which indicates you have some issues when it comes to the issues), here’s a big old bacaccia for you!
“What are YOU doing about it?”
You can start with not trying to convince everyone else it won't ever happen.
I thought the whole point of Trump was authenticity and avoiding the GOPE lesser of two evils gambit.
Sounds a lot like 2012 all over again.
Maybe you'd like me to bring you your beer too!
It’s an amazing thing to watch, Trumpsters surrendering their principles for a liberal from New York.
Typical kim Kardashian votets.
“I hate perversion, but where could a transgender use the bathroom?”
That’s their problem.
It wasn’t a big leap for me. I was kinda on the fence anyway.
Actually I would say it’s more a less accepting view on women’s issues. Telling women they’ve got to share the ladies’ room with transgenders is not going to go over well with women.
Gays and fetishists can be conservatives also. Look at J. Edgar Hoover. They also vote. This goes under the category of personal liberty.
I appreciate the offer, but I can't drink alcohol (I inherited a pre-disposition to migraines and alcohol tends to set them off).
Bring powder and popcorn, and we can sit down at the loading bench and use it up.
Then restrooms that are for one person, gender neutral is a solution. Public restrooms present a social situation where personal privacy is violated to varying degrees. Many people, even straight people feel a certain degree of discomfort using them.
It will be far worse if Hitlery is elected.
That is ultimately how it will work out and what the left is aiming for. But it remains to be seen that that kind of invasion of privacy will be tolerated. If it were not a serious privacy issue then the transgenders would not be so determined to use the ladies’ room in the first place.
