On Thursday, Republican frontrunner Donald Trump took the liberal stance on transgender restroom access. Media outlets can call it "moderate" all they want, but it is inescapable that Trump defended biological men using women's restrooms. The Donald is not exactly hesitant to offend people, and transgressing political correctness has been one of the centerpieces of his campaign. He even declared in the past that he would protect Christians and social conservatives, but this acceptance of "transgender rights" may be a sign that he has started pandering to the "center" for the general election.
Conservatives have long warned that Trump is unpredictable, that he would make a horrible Republican standard bearer because he does not represent the classical issues of that party. Now it seems The Donald might be proving them right -- after most of the socially conservative voters in the South already backed the real estate tycoon.
Trump attacked the North Carolina law which reserved multiple-person restrooms in schools and government facilities to only those people of the appropriate biological sex. This law was intended to protect the privacy of girls and boys, men and women, but many companies attacked it as discriminatory. Rather than defending the law -- as those who find The Donald a champion of conservative or politically incorrect values might expect -- Trump trashed it.
"North Carolina did something that was very strong and they're paying a big price and there's a lot of problems," said Trump, who would have left things as they were. "There have been very few complaints the way it is. People go, they use the bathroom that they feel is appropriate, there has been so little trouble."
This stance sounds moderate -- Trump is arguing that there should be no restrictions -- but in reality, it is a complete surrender to a small, vocal minority. If public restrooms must be one way or the other, why side with the infinitesimal minority of people who identify with the sex opposite the one they were born with, rather than the millions of men and women who are comfortable with their birth sex?
Why can we not have more single-serve, unisex restrooms, to avoid the issue entirely? Trump attacked the idea of separate transgender restrooms as a waste of money -- he's right -- but he did not address this solution, which many restaurants have already adopted.
In matter of fact, Trump is incorrect that there has been "so little trouble." Women who claim to have been abused as children are now vehemently opposing the opening of girls' and women's restrooms to biological men. When the New York Times attacked Americans concerned about this issue as effectively insane, controlled by "transgender bathroom hysteria," these disenfranchised people took to Twitter to express their outrage. Regardless of what Trump or the New York Times says, many Americans are concerned about this, and it's not just because of "transphobia."
Nevertheless, The Donald was quite explicit in his support for transgender access. He said that if Caitlyn Jenner (born Bruce Jenner) walked into Trump Tower, The Donald would let her use the restroom of her choice.
If @Caitlyn_Jenner walked into Trump Tower, what bathroom would @RealDonaldTrump suggest she use? #TrumpTODAY https://t.co/E6jLyif6ls

The Federalist's Ben Domenech once explained why social conservatives in the South might back Donald Trump. Domenech said these voters "have no illusions about [Trump's] unbelief. The difference is that while they believe Ted Cruz and Marco Rubio would be one more round of good soldiers for their cause, they think Donald Trump would be a tank."
But when it comes to actually fighting for conservative values, Trump ends up on the other side. Indeed, in a classic battle involving political correctness, he falls neatly in line. The Donald might not be a tank, but rather a Trojan horse.
I don’t know why I try but here goes.
Do you realize that you are electing the President of the United States? This is the man who will either seal the border, stop globalist trade, protect our 1st and 2nd Amendments, kill Obamacare and Common Core or . . .
Work with donors and special interests to give us more of what has decimated this country for decades.
You’re intellect is much too towering for the hoi polloi to compete with. Regards to Alice.
Generals choose their battles.
Or raise taxes, evolve on closing the border (amnesty), support the Leftist social agenda, and be worse than Clinton.
The list of actions that FRumpsters are certain that Trump will carry out in exchange for their souls is getting shorter and shorter.
No. I’d rather worry about bathrooms.
Forgot to mention that was sarcasm
Was that an insult to me?
“This article is a lie. I posted a vanity explaining Trumps position.”
Of course it is a lie. However the Cruz people are just following in the footsteps of the Lying Ted Cruz. Now it is easy to see why they follow him like an idol. Lie, lie, lie.
“Did Trump say that people should use the bathroom they FEEL is appropriate or was that his evil twin?”

You can hear his reply for yourself without depending on the interpretation of others:

“LOLOLOLOL....evidently Trump is on Hannity tonight back tracking what he said on the Today show.”
That is what a Cruz robot would say. I say he is expanding and clarifying on what he said. It is a states right issue. Of course you are going to hate no matter what.
I doubt it. You seem very comfortable with your advocacy.
“I honestly WANT to support Trump....I really do. Then he does a open mouth and insert foot thingy”
How is it I don’t believe a damn word of what you said.
I paraphrased him accurately. He’s a feely kind of guy.
You are so full of it.
I do.
And you should.
It’s part of the package of having a candidate who isn’t afraid to enter enemy territory, doesn’t have ‘handlers’ and doesn’t have canned, prepared answers. He’s not a career politician. It can be refreshing sometimes and maddening other times.
What I got from what Trump said was that neither side of the issue should have been passing any laws, because there was never a problem with this to begin with.
I agree with that sentiment, but I also recognize the agenda behind the gay movement that created the issue.
Trump is a problem solver, not an ideological guy, so he might just look at the issue as a problem to be solved rather than an ideological agenda. If you look at Trump’s answer in that context, it makes a little more sense. He basically came down to “Let’s get all these people in a room and see if we can hash out something that everyone can feel okay with”, which is what a problem solver does.
As for potty talk: Nobody’s gonna be checking for a schnozz under dresses, so if a tranny is even close to passable as a woman, he/she/it will use the woman’s bathroom and nobody is the wiser. That is as it has always been. If there is disruption or abuse, there are already laws to deal with that and no new laws are necessary.
The movement’s goal is really to erase gender and cause general havoc in society and it should be carefully fought. I think the North Carolina law that will certainly be overturned by the USSC was a hamfisted way of dealing with it. We need to be smarter than that.
Sure are a lot of Cruz peopled making damn fools of themselves tonight.
Do you smile when you eat the crap Sandwich?
That really hurts. I don't even know any “transsexuals” but I guess I should put that I am a “transsexual activist” in my tagline. Your statement says more about you than me. You are willing to mischaracterize other people's positions because you think that it will somehow help a candidate who has already lost. It is over. Ted Cruz is history; he has no chance to get the nomination. Trump has over 50% more delegates and millions more votes. Cruz most likely will not even be able to be reelected to his Senate seat.
I hope his wall has transgender restrooms in it.
