They came. They smoked. They left more than seven tons of trash.
After more than 8,000 people flocked Golden Gate Park on Wednesday, or 4/20, as the San Franciscos marijuana-loving community call it, countless bottles of Shasta soda, beer cans, Fruit Loops boxes and butts were left scattered across the grassy, green lawn.
"We think we will end up with over 15,000 pounds of trash," San Francisco Recreation and Park General Manager Phil Ginsburg said Thursday morning. "Yes, it's impactful to our park."
Ginsburg noted the mess was an improvement from last year. That trashy haul tipped the scales at 17,000 pounds.
Police said the event was mostly peaceful, though one person with a gun was taken into custody. A park employee said the man had pulled a gun and people nearby ran away.
Officers also removed four parents who brought small children to the smoky party, San Francisco police said.
The unsanctioned event has no permit and no event organizer, but even so, the city sends park crews out to clean up the mess at the taxpayer's expense.
"I really don't like it," said a 4/20 attendee named "Kourtney," who didn't look like he was cleaning up much trash himself.
Ginsburg said his employees would probably rather doing something else on a Thursday morning. But he noted it was Earth Day and that his crews were doing important work. The cleanup began at 6 a.m., he said, and would likely take a few hours.
Also Lenin’s birthday?
Or adjust the sprinkler timers...
Funny you mentioned that, I walk in the park most days and did so yesterday about 530- saw one plastic trash bag that had probably 15 empty bags of nacho Doritos in it. Thought I would view a couple of willowy young things, they were all chubby and dirty. All of them.
All I know is that ad sure worked on me as a kid, I never even thought of littering.
Of course, it shouldn’t take an ad like that to convince folks that it isn’t good to litter.
In 1997, I traveled to Washington, DC., to attend this peculiar gathering called “Stand In The Gap,” put on by a religious group- The Promise Keepers.
There were OVER a million people, mostly men and boys, gathered on the US Mall in Wash., DC.
The idea was that once and for all, everyone in attendance would confess sin, and take responsibility for all- that THAT sin had wrought, and to ask for forgiveness and humble guidance from the Almighty.
It was a spectacular event and process, to include Billy Graham, speaking on a Jumbotron, due to safety concerns, to native American tribal chiefs offering their perspectives and prayers.
On the bizarre side- topless lesbian protesters were stationed strategically at the entrance gates to try and offend as many attendees as possible.
The point of my post is that once the event was over, EVERYONE in attendance pickeed up the trash around themselves and put it in trash receptacles provided, and the place was almost pristine, considering that over a million people had converged on the spot hours before.
See the trash spectacle of the Nation of Islam sponsored Million Man March, which was a paltry few hundred thousand in turn out, or the Obama Inauguration for examples of gigantic refuse fields.
I loves me some bitter clingers!!!
They do this all over the country, we have a similar unsanctioned “Hempfest” in Chicago.
I think the reason they don’t try to stop it or bust it up is because that is counterproductive. The ‘heads might be messy and loud, but as long as you leave em be, they’ll be peaceful and there probably won’t be as much as a fistfight.
However, if the cops try to stop it, then they’ve got a mob of angry people on their hands who will roam the neighborhood trashing property in protest. That’s what happened in my town back in the 90s when the cops charged into “Hempfest” and tried to arrest people left and right. They simply couldn’t arrest everyone and the majority just dispersed and caused trouble all over the lakefront.
Leftists: Do as I say, not as I do.
I thought it was renamed Golden Gay Park?
“Leftists: Do as I say, not as I do.”
AKA “Gore’s Rule”
Or a Barack Obama inauguration.

I guess those climate change experts wanted to create jobs for illegals again
I was there that day, standing in the shadow of the Washington Monument in the afternoon. By days end I was quite thirsty, but glad I had attended. Yes, we left the place clean.
For being a dopefest, there are sure a lot of spent Natty Light beer 30-packs on the field! No class, no taste!
The same at the DC and local Tea Party rallies I attended. We left it cleaner than we found it.
These would be the exact same morons who cry about how much garbage ‘mankind’ is dumping in the oceans.
Think of all the brownies consumed
Think of all the brownies consumed
Think of all the brownies consumed
Now it’s up to 22,000 pounds.
