WASHINGTON (AP) — The Latest on campaign 2016 (all times Eastern):

8:15 a.m.

Donald Trump says he believes transgender people should be able to use whichever bathroom they choose.

Speaking at a town hall event on NBC's "Today" Thursday, Trump said North Carolina's so-called "bathroom law," which directs transgender people to use the bathroom that matches the gender on their birth certificates, has caused unnecessary strife.

It’s the drip-drip-drip that gets the homosexual agenda passed. Why should we have to repeal a law against this just because they demand it? We’re already seeing sex change procedures being covered by health care plans, as if mutilating your own body is a from of health care. They want to teach this stuff to your kids in the school. We’re already seeing children who haven’t reached puberty yet being helped along with their “transition.” It’s being made illegal for psychiatrists to counsel people out of these ideas. This is a whole perverse, twisted movement going on. You can’t just say you’ll keep giving in on this part of it and that part of it and expect to stop the movement. And, no matter how commonly it happens, it’s our job to defend the rights of defenseless children. The fact that it’s uncommon only makes it a cheaper and easier law to enforce.

He’s right about businesses should not be forced to build special bathrooms. That’s just insanity. Part of the war on business. I’ll give him credit for understanding the concept of not regulating businesses to death.

Still unanswered is which direction you point in if this person asks you where the restroom is?

And there may be people who look nothing like the opposite sex and have none of their parts, but still genuinely believe they’re the opposite sex. These are called crazy people. And 99% of the country shouldn’t be forced to change our lifestyle and comfort zone to accommodate the crazy lifestyle of 1%.

Obama’s or Hillary’s Supreme Court would absolutely pass policy that male/female bathrooms are discriminatory and trickle those ugly results down to the rest of the country in no time flat.

Same-sex marriage was the backdoor passing of the Equal Rights Amendment. Phyllis Schlafly herself warned that the ERA if passed would lead to same-sex marriage. The Supreme Court, to get the “desired outcome” of same-sex marriage, wrote the ERA de facto into the existing Constitution. That means that absolutely no gender distinctions under the law can or will hold up in federal court. It will be ruled unconstitutional segregation to even have male and female restrooms soon.

Conservatives should learn from the failure on same-sex marriage that they need to pass constitutional amendments to support their beliefs. Judges can’t be trusted to do it. The outrage over this bathroom issue should be used as momentum to push an amendment that makes it clear men and women can be treated differently in marriage and any biological issues.

You know, I understand what your trying to say with that picture. I fully believe you are wrong. That said:

Did you take more than 2 minutes deciding on that? It's lame. It doesn't stand by itself.

I've heard your cries, your innuendos. Surely you have better to show us than some 1978 Planet of the Apes prospectus still photo?

The issue in NC isn’t just restrooms. It is changing rooms (like at a public swimming pool) and locker rooms. And it allows ANYONE who claims to be “identifying” as opposite gender the right to enter that facility, even if there are five year old girls changing out of their bathing suits. I cannot even wrap my head around how insane this is.

This is WHY this is such a big deal in NC. Coming to a neighborhood near you.

Ok, let's get "series" FRiend. Male locker rooms are open bay showers and rows of lockers with a bench between. Do you want a genetic male that identifies as a woman with hormone developed breasts and hips, shaved legs, panties and a bra, changing into a bikini next to your son? Choose wisely. The women's locker rooms usually have more individual privacy as I understand.

Does this get walked back? Or is the inner liberal leaking out?

I wish people would see the actual interview for context.

Trump is “opposed to the move to create new, non-gendered bathrooms open to anyone, calling that push “discriminatory in a certain way” and “unbelievably expensive for businesses and the country.”

If you ever owned a commercial building and had to retrofit for ADA, you would understand his apprehension to this.

Trump was asked if Caitlyn Jenner went into Trump Tower, would you let her use any bathroom she wanted and Trump said yes.

Big deal.

Transgender bathrooms and Harriet Tubman on the $20 bill.

Seems to me the Democrats and their media friends have moved on to the General Election.

The NC situation has to do with existing facilities, and with existing societal norms. The M and the F on the birth certificate is the guiding principle here, not feelings.

Trump actually revealed how he might “deal” with the perpetually outraged and aggrieved with his comments.

Reminds me of what he said about Scalia.

Up until now, I had high hopes that Trump would at least stand for Christians having rights too. Those are over now with this statement. Trump, like all people who have spectacular business accumen, is sadly unable to recognize the issues that should be above monetary concerns.

I still think Trump would be best for America’s bottom line economically. However, I’m no longer an enthusiastic supporter. I’ll vote for the Republican nominee; not because I respect the one chosen but only for my Dad, who sacrificed along with many others so that I could. I’ll do it as a remembrance of him and be glad he’s not here to see how the process has become almost meaningless.

Actually, yes I was concerned before the Charlotte ordinance. It has been happening all over the country in the high schools where boys “identifying” as girls are being allowed to use the girls restroom and locker room. I find that to be a problem. It is not an issue of “trannies”, as you casually dismiss. It is anybody that “says” they identify as the opposite sex. They don’t have to actually BE a “transgender”, they can just claim it. I is patently absurd. And very dangerous.

Recently there was the case of the man “identifying” as a woman who raped two women in a women’s facility. There was also the situation in Canada (which is where this is headed) where a university decided to make their bathrooms/showers a free-for-all, and *surprise*, two males were caught taking video of girls over the shower stalls. The administration there was actually surprised. Good grief.

Yes, it is has been a concern of mine for well over a year.

You have given me a glimmer of a justification by which I might see my way clear to support the R nominee. That thought had not occurred to me. Thanks.

This is sad. I think this issue is one of the most extreme homosexual agenda items out there. Arguably even worse than same-sex marriage because it’s a direct attack on the privacy rights of innocent bystanders.

This has always been the nature of homosexuality. The bible has two examples of Homosexuals getting the upper hand in a society, and then attempting to force homosexuality on everyone else.

(Sodom and Gomorrah, and the Battle of Gibeah)

I take these two examples to mean that it is an inherent characteristic of the condition, and has been for several thousand years.

The reality is most Republicans from New York are go-with-the-flow on the social issues, abortion and homosexual agenda issues. That’s the culture there. They might pay lip service to those issues when it’s easy, but they will back down if the left puts up any kind of a fight because the issues just don’t mean enough to them to be worth the effort to fight for.

Exactly what I think. I've been watching votes for many decades, and you can always count on the North-Eastern Republicans to sell the party down the river over any social issue. They can't seem to help themselves. They just don't think the underpinnings of society are worth defending.

Well there have been transexuals around since at least the 70’s when surgery advanced. So far it has not been a big problem in public facilities. We have laws against rape and deviant behavior. Women have been raped in public restrooms in the past by men who were not dressed as transexuals. Women get raped in public places all the time. Its not necessarily connected to this issue in a large sense.

The only place you and I agree on this issue is that in schools non gender changing and restroom areas are a poor idea.
