The Treasury Department made it official this afternoon: Harriet Tubman is replacing Andrew Jackson on the front of the $20, and there are other bills getting big changes too.
Treasury Secretary Jacob Lew announced today that in addition to Tubman, the $10 and $5 bills are getting makeovers. And dont worry, Alexander Hamilton isnt going anywhere.
But the back will be changed to this:
The new $10 will honor the story and the heroes of the womens suffrage movement against the backdrop of the Treasury building The new $10 design will depict that historic march and honor Lucretia Mott, Sojourner Truth, Susan B. Anthony, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, and Alice Paul for their contributions to the suffrage movement.
And Abraham Lincoln is staying on the $5, but events that took place at the Lincoln Memorial will now be featured on the back:
In 1939, at a time when Washingtons concert halls were still segregated, world-renowned Opera singer Marian Anderson helped advance civil rights when, with the support of First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt, she performed at the Lincoln Memorial in front of 75,000 people. And in 1963, Martin Luther King, Jr. delivered his historic I Have a Dream speech at the same monument in front of hundreds of thousands. Honoring these figures will bring to life events at the Lincoln Memorial that helped to shape our history and our democracy.
The new bills are expected to come into circulation by 2020.
Moving to the barter system, are we? ;-)
This takes effect 2030. Decades after the One has left office.
And apparently Reagan isn’t getting on any money in the next 15 years (unless someone wants to change the $50 or $100).
Can I get Cankles on a 100 Billion dollar bill?
Will I be able to buy a cup of coffee with it?

I’ll start asking for my change in $1’s and $10’s only.
makes sense since many folks already worship it
They forgot to announce the change to the $2 bill. That will depict Thomas Jefferson and Sally Hemmings in amorous embrace.
To be followed by the $69 bill displaying Barack Obama at Man’s Country.
I guess my new Currency will be $1’s and $50’s.
2020? That’s enough time for President Trump to stop the nonsense and fire everyone involved.
When Barry leaves office he’s going to star in a new Rambo-Transformers movie with Clooney. The movie will be named Rambutt.
I think an artist name Mugabe had a hand in it!
Harriet Tubman is a worthy choice. She helped a lot of people escape slavery. She was a Republican and fierce supporter of the Second Amendment. I expected far worse from the 0bama regime.
OTOH, Andrew Jackson is an American war hero who balanced the budget.
It seems to me we should have a place for both on our currency. The obvious solution would hve been to create a $25 bill and put Tubman on it.
It’s being replaced by “From each according to his ability, to each according to his need”, followed by “Allahu Akbar.”
Originally, our paper money was a certificate, essentially an IOU for a certain amount of gold or silver. Paper is much easier to carry.
When we went off the gold standard, the paper itself became the money, instead of a certificate representing the actual money.
Besides, the section you cited specifically states that it is related to the states. Our currency is Federal.
“A nickel ain’t worth a dime anymore.” — Yogi Berra
Ronald Reagan deserves to be on some denomination of money.
Obama needs to be on the Three Dollar bill...
Just saying...
I agree that Tubman is a perfectly acceptable choice. The fact is that the current set of notes haven’t had a new face since 1928. New faces have been needed for a long time.
The whole idea of Andrew Jackson on the $20 Federal Reserve Note was a big time “screw you” to the President who fought the establishment of the Federal Reserve system with every fiber of his being.
I would like to see some other notes become popular, as you suggest, like a $25 and $200 bill.
Adjusted for inflation, the 1928 series would look like this today:
$1 = $14
$2 = $28
$5 = $70
$10 = $140
$20 = $280
$50 = $700
$100 = $1400
So maybe we should add a few bills to make cash more attractive to use.
Tubman was a criminal at the time of her activities. The guy who shot Kate Stienle should get the hundred.
