Shunned for saying they're Muslims: life for Ahmadis after Asad Shah's murder

Some of Samia Sultan’s neighbours don’t greet her any more, and sometimes it’s hard for her to understand why. Sultan, a dentist, lives in Glasgow, in an area of the city that is – like most Muslim populations in the UK – majority Sunni. But Sultan isn’t Sunni: she is Ahmadi. And that is the source of the problem.

“My neighbours were fine, but when they came to know I was Ahmadi, their attitude changed,” Sultan explains....“They would no longer reply to my greeting As-salāmu ‘alaykum [peace be upon you]” with Wa’alaykumu s-salām [and upon you peace].”

When Asad Shah, a popular shopkeeper living in the multicultural Shawlands area of Glasgow, was fatally stabbed outside his newsagents on the night before Good Friday, the initial local presumption was that this had been a white-on-black hate crime...But it soon emerged that Police Scotland were treating the crime as “religiously prejudiced”, an unusually specific form of words, and that Shah was an Ahmadi, a member of a minority sect of Islam that faces persecution and bloody violence in countries such as Pakistan and Indonesia, and is treated with open hostility by many orthodox Muslims in the UK because it differs from their belief that Muhammad is the final prophet sent to guide humankind, as orthodox Muslims believe is laid out in the Qur’an.

The man now charged with Shah’s murder is also a Muslim. On Thursday, Tanveer Ahmed, from Bradford, released a statement through his lawyer, justifying the killing because Shah had “disrespected” Islam.

A posting on the Facebook page Anti Qadianiat (Tahafuz Khatme Nubuwwat), included the Guardian’s report of Shah’s death, with the message “Congratulations to all Muslims”.

I have to agree with your assessment on the face of it, but nevertheless the Ahmadis are probably Islam's best chance at modeling civilized behavior, and I don't want to see them get wiped out.

They are very atypical. Like the Jehovah's Witnesses of Islam.

If I had to describe Islam in a single phrase, it would be “a collection of justifications for Mohammad’s personal urges and desires”.

I’d wager it’s damn near impossible to civilize that. Probably the only reason these people carry the name is the death sentence that hangs over any who would leave the religion.

Ahmadis are irrelevant because only 1% (or so) of Muslims are Ahmadis. They are silly frauds who only consider the peaceful Koran passages from when Mo’ was preaching to no avail in Mecca.

Later verses of the Koran have superior status and greater Koranic authority than the earlier ones. And the later verses from when Mo lived in Medina are from when he became a killer and warlord.

The tribal basics. Money sex power plus polygamy give unmarried men strong incentives to become warriors, to join Mo' army to to find an infidel female sex partner/sex slave/wife all rolled into one or forget the wife part. Same as American Indian tribes were very keen on grabbing their enemies women via war. To turn into sex slaves and wives. For their own pleasure and to crank out more warriors. The larger the tribe the better its chances to win wars.

And it takes considerable courage, since a large percentage of Muslims believe death an appropriate punishment for apostasy. And it does get carried out in many parts of the world. It is a defining element of crossing the line from acceptable religion to dangerous unacceptable cult. The Hotel California aspect of Islam needs to be pointed out more often, more forcefully, to fools who have bought into the peaceful, friendly religion nonsense.
