It's called a closed primary.
Cruz has generally done better in closed primaries. But not yesterday.
2012: Romney - 103,142 votes in NY Primary
2008: McCain 333,001 votes in New York
Romney 178,043 votes in NY running against McCain
Trump got more voters out in the 2016 GOP Primary than both McCain and Romney combined in 2008 and over 400,000 more than Romney in 2012

28% of NYs registered voters are independent and could not vote in this closed primary. In the general, the vast majority of these voters will vote Republican, based on polls of their preference.

I was curious after looking at the stats you posted. I also see that GWB got over a million votes in the 2000 primary, but still got crushed by Al in the NY general... I’m hoping that 2016 will not be that way..
