$1 billion concussion lawsuit against NFL upheld

The estimated $1 billion (0.88 billion euros) settlement agreed by the National Football League and players who sued for compensation over concussions was upheld on Monday by a federal appeals court.
A three-judge panel of the US Circuit Court of Appeals in Philadelphia gave unanimous approval to the deal which was inked in April last year in a landmark ruling.
A group of players had objected to the terms of the settlement, with lawyers arguing it does not provide adequate compensation for victims of chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), a disease which has been found in several deceased players' brains but is impossible to diagnose in living people.
However in upholding the terms of the settlement, judge Thomas Ambro wrote in a 69-page ruling that the deal was "imperfect but fair."
"It is the nature of a settlement that some will be dissatisfied with the ultimate result," wrote Ambro, describing the deal as "a testament to the players, researchers, and advocates who have worked to expose the true human costs of a sport so many love. Though not perfect, it is fair."

You got that right!
I love watching football, but I cannot imagine wanting to have my son play it. The injuries, drug abuse, cultural corruption, long term health risks make it a terrible gamble for the participants. And of course all of those risks apply to the college athletes as well, who are not compensated - while their coaches and associates make millions of dollars.
Take a look at the sport of boxing. Boxing was widely popular about 60 years ago. Now hardly anybody follows that sport. Horse racing is the same story. NFL football could go the same way. That is why cities like San Diego should think long and hard about spending a billion dollars for a football stadium.
Exactly. And I think that is what you are beginning to see and will see more of. Get a 4-6 year contract with guaranteed money and then retire at 28.
With all the social experimenting Goodell has been doing with the NFL, I no longer feel a vested interest in the sport so I don’t care if, ultimately, it implodes.
Interestingly, one of the reason you see the NFL trying to expand its reach to England, Mexico, China, etc. is certainly for viewership, but also for the long run as perhaps more Americans forsake the dangers of football. They’ll need foreign players in much the same way as the EPL no longer relies on English footballers.
Quite frankly, I think the NFL is using the EPL as the model to follow.
I see the refs calling a lot more personal fouls and targeting in an effort to cut liability, and don't even think about hitting the quarterback. Might as well put a dress on him and be done.
That’s my thought, I think we will see the NFL try to open camps in Africa, just like baseball did with the Dominican Republic, to develop players on the cheap.
And I loved college football, but now for the sake of the almighty dollar they’ve sold their soul, and it’s just not as fun anymore.
I’d ditch the playoffs in a heartbeat and go back to the way it was with New Years Day Bowl Games and the endless arguing in the off-season as to who really is the best team.
You want to see more black figure skaters?
Yup.
It’s a tough call-my husband heard a guy (I can’t remember the name) state how playing in the NFL changed the lives of his family in a way that no other job could have. Not only did he go from poverty to wealth, but it opened doors for him after he retired from playing. He thanked God for football and the NFL and blasted those who were trying to destroy it.
On the other hand, my brother has gotten to know one of the former “purple people eaters” and his brain injuries have left him in a bad way. It’s possible that old age has brought him to this state, but multiple concussions over several years can’t be ignored.
My boys play football and love it. They won’t be good enough to take the hits that occur in Div 1 or the NFL, but the older one has gotten a concussion and they’ve both told me how some guys cheat to get around the test and back in the game.
I would implement a weight limit in the NFL of no more than 250 pounds.
“In a related story, NFL Ticket prices skyrocket”
More like “NFL asks taxpayers to subsidize their stadiums as well as this lawsuit since an NFL team brings so much growth to various regions.”
Look at that rampant growth and those millions of high paying jobs available in mega-rich cities such as Cleveland and Pittsburgh as examples of what the NFL can do for a city! Their success is due to the billion+ dollars their taxpayers were forced to give to the NFL so that the game show could go on in those cesspool cities.
I hope I live to see the day where that pathetic, stupid, ridiculous sport goes the way of boxing ... it is nothing but a 3 hour snoozefest ... about 15 minutes of actual game surrounded by 2h 45m of commercials. The stupidity associated with this ridiculous game is trickling down to the college and high school levels).
What’s amazing is that the game wasn’t all that bad in the 70s and 80s (where great teams like the Cowboys got screwed by the steroid ridden Steelers and elite quarterbacks like Joe Montana dominated the game) ... these days, its an all out thugfest no too much different from WWF wrastlin’ :-).
I think the media saturation and the gambling industries will keep football going. It might die back, but even if it shrinks by 2/3rds that’s still be bigger than any other single sport, I think. I don’t think soccer gets big that fast, if ever. I can’t see the other pro-sports gaining tremendously from loss in NFL interest. I could be wrong, I am certainly no football fan.
Freegards
IF one could guarantee to a junior high school athlete that they would make it to the NFL, then at least that would be a good case that it could be worth it. But only .002% of Junior High football players will ever see a dime from the sport, while hundreds of thousands will end up with ruined knees, steroid-ravaged testicles and kidneys, and of course brain damage. With those odds, I’ll just play the lottery.
Johnny Carson is still the best interviewer there ever was on late-night TV, IMO.
Very good idea.
My husband got through college on an athletic scholarship. He was playing football and wrestling until his wrestling coach strongly suggested he think about which sport was providing the scholarship. I’m thankful that he didn’t play too much college football.
Athletic scholarships are valuable even if you never make it to the professional level. No cash in hand but a free or reduced education is a good thing for poorer kids. Division II schools provide them as well so you don’t have to be an ultra elite athlete.
A lot of the new laws we see now, battling newly discovered forms of discrimination, are nothing more than make-work programs for lawyers...
I have been a Panthers fan on and off since their inaugural season. Last year I was more in to the game than ever before, for obvious reasons if you follow football.
That superb owl was as fixed as any match I have ever witnessed. Besides our QB running away from the football and then rolling around like an insincere clown on the sideline when the game was lost, then dressing like travon of the skittles post-game, one of our DBS pulled Luke Kuechly, perhaps the finest all-round lb in the game right now, away from the play, to allow a denver TD.
The whole thing was scripted to push the prospects of a race war forward,as well as make the sharps in vegas, betting on the dogs, more rich, with Beyoncé representing black panthers at half, whilst carolina panthers QB shares his name with Huey newton, founder of the black panthers, that terrorist org formed only a few miles from where the game took place, it happening to be the 50th anniversary of the black panthers founding. Then whitey mcwhitestuff Peyton manning peddling crap pizza and lousy beer before riding off on his pale horse.
That would be the NHL.
This is what is in store.
It’s the music, the Thug Culture that whats to “Bully” everybody into submission in every aspect of our lives.
Wayne Simmonds is a very talented hockey player that can and will fight anyone. I have no issue with that.
I do have an issue with this video that portrays his efforts on the ice as a battle between “The Man” and Black culture. It briefly displays his on ice stills but quickly degenerates into a series of fights with other white players. All the while, the thug rap music celebrates and perpetuates a Black on White war.
It’s the celebration of this war that has reached virtually every aspect of our lives that is disturbing.
It’s even more disturbing that our public officials and our media are to afraid to say anything.

I wonder if Riddell and Schutt were involved in the deal.
