The notorious Guantanamo Bay came one step closer yesterday to shutting its doors after nine Yemeni prisoners were transferred to Saudi Arabia.
The US-controlled prison camp on Cuban soil now has 80 detainees, with 26 expected to be released in the summer.
The prisoners were unable to be sent back to their native Yemen due to a bloody civil war in the country. A Pentagon spokesperson said: "The United States is grateful to the government of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia for its humanitarian gesture and willingness to support ongoing US efforts to close the Guantanamo Bay detention facility."
