A startling video shows a 5-year-old boy getting paddled by his school principal in front of his mom.
Shana Marie Perez, who recorded the footage of her son's punishment, says she's had a long-running dispute with the school principal in Georgia. Her son has had 18 unexcused absences this school year and she was once arrested for his truancy.
She says the school threatened to call the police and have her arrested again if she did not give them permission to paddle Thomas.
She told IE: "I felt like I had no other option. The principal led me to believe that the paddle was the only option."
Perez said her son was "devastated about the whole situation."
"Every time I try to walk up to him he says 'don't hit me, don't hit me,'" she added.
The local sheriff says the school did nothing wrong because paddling is legal in Georgia as long as the parent gives their consent.
The disturbing video is re-igniting an old debate: is paddling really an effective way to punish a child this young?

Psychiatrist Dr. Gail Saltz told IE: "There is really no data to say that corporal punishment effects positive change."
She added: "When you take a kid that is already being oppositional and defiant, now you have taught him that another method of coping is to hit. Chances are you are going to get a child that is going to hit."
The school district says they are investigating the incident and their discipline policies
Oh my. Who was the female principal? The first female principal I remember from Jackson became principal at my high school my junior or senior year. I think it was my senior year. And she had been a principal somewhere in North Jackson prior to being moved South. My elementary principal was Mr. Lord. The name alone was enough to keep most in line. My oldest brother met with Mr. Lord’s electric paddle quite a few times. But not enough. Ugh.
Different reports read differently, so the story does change. I think after reading everything it was implied to the mother and she inferred she would be jailed because of her past arrest for the truancy. Now if it was only implied and not outright stated the mother was wrong to allow the paddling to go on. She could have said “stop” at anytime and I am pretty sure they would have had to stop. But again what was actually said to her is not known.

The absences are a capital offense because it impacts Federal matching funds.
Otherwise, administrators care nothing about discipline.
Well, what does the principal say about it? She had a phone with video, does she ask him to re-iterate the implication or however/whatever he supposedly said to her to make her think she was going to be arrested if she didn’t go along with it?

Doesn’t sound like there is a Dad in the picture, and shame on this Mother who let this 5 year old get this far out of hand. If I had ever spit ON ANYONE, my Dad would have made me part of the wall papers, and rightfully so.
Mom told me if I got a paddling at school I was getting another at home. Many went unreported.

First of all, Georgia is a nenaderthal state if they still allow school officialt to hit a child with anything. Secondly, the woman had no choice, “let us hit your kid or you go to jail!” And reading between the lines, she’s a single mother so her other children? would be left alone or worse yet taken by the State. Third, I suspect at the end of the day it’s really about money. Missing 18 days puts a real crimp in the school’s ADA money! As for me, anyone hitting one of my children when they were five years old would be left with his jockstrap torn and bloody!

You do not know a whole lot of public school children under 10 years of age, do you? There are some real pieces of work at FOUR. I am not for teachers spanking children. However, if you could see what some children do in class without ANY consequence at home, you would think that someone needs to be doing some disciplining. Should it be the state? Ugh.
Individual responsibility needs to be stressed constantly. I could have used with that myself along the way.

Though tempted to sarcastically use “beat”, because that is the emotional term libs no doubt are obligated to use, I shall use “spank” because that is the only accurate term here.

One nephew graduated from Annapolis, and one graduated from West Point.
Three grand sons made high school all-state in football. Oldest grand son is a lawyer, and 2 others are finishing their BS degree. Others still in elementary, middle, or high school, and are “A” honors students with sports achievements. Home coming queen, cheerleader Captain, President of 400 member FFA chapter, etc.
On my mother’s side, which includes much spanking, there were/are 6 doctors, including my uncle which delivered me, 2 Generals, and 1 Judge.
If observing any of our frequent family get togethers you will observe many hugs and hear the sounds of “yes sir”, “no sir”. All well adjusted and popular members of the community and church. One son elected to political office.
I have yet to see the dire consequences of spanking. All the above group of people experienced both giving and receiving spanks. Seems to me spanking must have worked.
By the way, I received much more spanking than both my sister and my brother combined. I needed it. I hate to think what I might have become without it. In case you might wonder, I loved both my parents,and wept when they passed. I know libs will never be able to comprehend any of this.
Glad to know Neanderthals aren’t extinct yet! You’re a sick puppy! My uncle hit his kids. Now as adults, they are all dour individuals. HItting children is child abuse, it doesn’t solve any problems, and it makes kids mean.
I used to volunteer in the neighbourhood public school about 25 years ago. It was a country school, but they bused in most of the kids from the surrounding surveys, as the school population was low.
Let me tell you, more than half of those kids needs a good paddling. I can’t help but think that the teachers today wish for the good ol’ days when kids had respect and manners. Well, respect and manners sometimes were the result of a good spanking when it was required.
Given an IED and sent home gets my vote.

The point being, when you know there is punishment you aren’t going to misbehave when tempted. I never received the paddle, but some in my generation did and they are good, gentle men with mannerly children, kids to be proud of. I have known some with big time problems and they were allowed to run wild as kids with no supervision. They knew there were no consequences to face and so they did as they pleased. Prisons and psycho wards are full of such people. I think you have it backwards.
This is garbage. I think the mother wanted her fifteen minutes of fame and it was a setup at the expense of the kid. Mom should go to jail. There’s no real mother out there that would watch this crap, film it, and then cry foul. If it was my child there would be two women laid out on the floor.

frankly I don't trust the instincts of many teachers and I wouldn't trust them to have any common sense in reguard to the quaint old term "paddling"....
these children are NOT their children...
