I was amazed at Ft Irwin CA to see them lift the power pack out of an Abrams onto the ground & then fire it up.
Meanwhile we were working on AVLBs with the same M48 hull that I remembered from the 1970’s as the M48A5. This was in 2000.
The tank was designed to be virtually “plug and play”: pull the bad component, slap in another and your tank is back in the fight. However, it’s heavy, dirty and exhaustive work for both the mechanics and the tank crew. I am sure all these new female tank operators are going to pick up the slack.
