Hundreds of thousands of student loan borrowers will now have an easier path to getting their loans discharged, the Obama administration announced Tuesday.
The Department of Education will send letters to 387,000 people theyve identified as being eligible for a total and permanent disability discharge, a designation that allows federal student loan borrowers who cant work because of a disability to have their loans forgiven. The borrowers identified by the Department wont have to go through the typical application process for receiving a disability discharge, which requires sending in documented proof of their disability. Instead, the borrower will simply have to sign and return the completed application enclosed in the letter.
If every borrower identified by the Department decides to have his or her debt forgiven, the government will end up discharging more than $7.7 billion in debt, according to the Department.
Americans with disabilities have a right to student loan relief, Ted Mitchell, the undersecretary of education, said in a statement. And we need to make it easier, not harder, for them to receive the benefits they are due. About 179,000 of the borrowers identified by the Department are in default on their student loans, and of that group more than 100,000 are at risk of having their tax refunds or Social Security checks garnished to pay off the debt. Often borrowers losing out on these benefits arent even aware that theyre eligible for a disability discharge, said Persis Yu, the director of the Student Loan Borrower Assistance Project at the National Consumer Law Center.
Borrowers just frankly dont know about this program, she said.

How in the hell do those considered disabled have a right to debt relief? they are already getting other benefits, aren't they?
What LAW gave obama this power?
I hurt my pinkie. I’m disabled please forgive my loan.
Govt says ..ok
More rights! Who knew?
Shadow reparations?
People’s disabilities do not establish a right to have their debt discharged any more than people’s circumstances are delegations of power to government to address those circumstances.
So-called “progressives” are lawless...
WTHeck?
My spouse is disabled, but we don’t have student loan debt.
Where’s our reparations?
Can I ask WTH they bothered to get those degrees for, if they couldn’t possibly use them?
“What LAW gave obama this power?”
Laws? Obama? You must be joking...know any other good party jokes?? All while the GOPe does nothing to stop him in return for “hands off” treatment. Pretty sweet setup for both corrupt parties while they steal from the taxpayers.
Obama will do a ton of Crazy things before he’s evicted from the White House
Okay. So who decides what a disability is? So many have been busted playing basketball while claiming disability. That system is beyond broken.
Backdoor the free education, another step towards transforming the US into a Euro style democratic-socialist country.
Universities indoctrinate students to the glories of ever-expanding government, and then Da Gummint assures that Universities face ZERO RISK of the tuition loans.
ONE HAND WASHES THE OTHER, NICE ARRANGEMENT.
Pulled a muscle in my ear.
Yes he will. We have not seen anything yet.
That’s an easy one - because he enjoys few things in life more than p*ssing away the money of hard-working Americans.
Some how they will eventually have to give up their guns if they have them.
“Okay. So who decides what a disability is?
That is a very good question. In the private sector, insurance companies will not cover very risky activities as they are more likely to cause injury or death.
Same should be the case here. Being overweight is defined now as a disability, so one can eat himself into forgiveness of a student loan, I guess.
Disabled... disenfranchised... disadvantaged... perceived diss from da man... discharged loan... disgusting.
Obama is not doing this on his own. He doesn’t do anything to be nice or fair, look at what he’s done for blacks.
