This is a special case of the church-state muddle that pretty much defined larger America (and Europe before it) for a long long time.
The more I regard it, the less I like it. It dumbs down the church and whitewashes the state. It is better than a world with no faith at all in it, but if we wonder why we can’t seem to find a situation that looks like the energy of the first century church, this compromise with Caesar might be a very good reason for it.
