Setting the Record Straight about Colorado’s Republican Caucus
Ari Armstrong ^ | 3/11/16

Posted on 04/11/2016 1:59:17 PM PDT by justlittleoleme

“All Colorado Republicans [registered more than a month] could vote in precinct caucuses, which chose delegates to congressional and state conventions, who voted for national delegates.” That’s my (unabbreviated) Tweet summarizing the way that Colorado Republicans chose delegates to the national Republican Convention. I should know; as a Colorado Republican I participated in the caucuses.

But apparently, for some Trump supporters, my experience participating in the caucus process is no match for a Drudge headline claiming it never happened. As of the evening of April 10, Drudge claimed on its main page, “Fury as Colorado has no primary or caucus; Cruz celebrates voterless victory.”

So let’s set the facts straight, beginning with my own experiences with the caucus system.

After long being an unaffiliated voter, I registered as a Republican voter late last year, in part so that I could participate in Colorado’s Republican caucus system this year. (I plan to remain a Republican, barring an unforeseen major shift in the political scene.) I looked up how to participate in my precinct caucus on March 1, showed up, participated in the meeting, and successfully ran as an alternate delegate to the county convention on March 19 and to the state convention on April 9.

-snip-

A completely fair headline of what happened this year would have been, “Colorado Republicans Select Presidential Delegates the Same Way They Did Last Time.” But the reality of the situation is so much more boring that the trumped up version of it.

I never even seen a Colorado poll. I have a hunch Trump would not have been in 1st place, but I really do not know.

So, because you want Trump to win, you want to undermine the will of the Republicans who did show up and voted?
~~~~~~~
This is how I feel about the GOP’s threats to run someone with less votes than the forerunner.
Colorado has had the same caucus system since I moved here in the 1980's. I remember going to the 1988 state convention and voting for the slate of Bush delegates.
In the 1990's a presidential primary was organized that was abandoned beginning in the 2004 election to save money. The caucuses and state convention were still held, they just didn't decide the candidate(s) the national delegates would be pledged to vote for in the three intervening presidential elections.
The Republicans used a straw poll in the last election that bound the national delegates, but abandoned it because our precinct caucuses are so early we were pledging delegates to candidates no longer in the race at the convention.
That said, both parties now want to bring back the presidential primary as on both sides it has pretty much been a CF, to use an old Army phrase.
I haven’t either...There is no clear indicator as to how the public feels in Colorado...Only the GOPe and their assignment of delegates...You know, kinda like what a banana republic would do...
The guy never bothered to show up for the district convention. Never signed in or picked up his badge or credentials. He was on the slate at the district convention to run for a delegate position to the state convention, but got no votes. If he were there, he would at least gotten one vote — his own.
I think the answer here is to take the delegates out of the picture. Just don’t have any. They are being bribed anyway. Wined, dined, sixty-nined - literally.
I don’t care who you support, this cannot stand. If there’s an issue that everyone on the right can support, its a system where you vote, and the delegates chuck that in favor of the guy who wrote the biggest check or bought them the best whore the night before.
We know for a fact it isn’t working in Congress.
This is not going to end well for the Republicans, because in the end, the liberals are just being honest about who they are. It’s the GOP who is the real evil in this country.
Oh, and et tu Rush Limbaugh? I looked at his transcript, and he seems to condone this. He’s got some splainin to do.
Classic Trump supporter ad hominem deflection. You can’t defend your position so you throw feces around.
Cruz is a wholly -owned PROSTITUTE of the Republican Establishment, except they will terminate him as a “useful idiot”
I suspect you are just fine with that.
Yes, you got me. I’m a GOPe operative posting from an undisclosed location and getting paid 25 cents a word by Mitt Romney who personally stops by and pays me out his pocket.
LOL! You f-ing guys and your boogey man conspiracy theories! You’d be hilarious if you weren’t so freaking pathetic.
I’ve been here since ‘98, so don’t play that crap with me.
Trump is a self-admitted crony capitalist who doesn’t even have a passing familiarity with conservative principles because he says whatever is politically expedient at the time (see abortion double-flip with a twist) who is known for shucking and jiving suckers like you by hyping his sh!tty personal brand.
His platform is to the right of Reagan, whom I worked for. I suspect you DESPISE “conservative principles” like so many Establishment cronies do.
Trump and his team hosed the thing. Stop blaming Cruz. Trump fired his CO guy two days before the Convention. Then, at the Convention, the sheet that was passed out showing Trump’s delegates by the Trylump team, had SEVEN names misspelled and listed a CRUZ delegate as a Trump delegate. Trump wasn’t going to get much because the people of CO do not like him, but the Trump team made it much worse for themselves.
So Trump’s ineptitude should be just cause for taking away Cruz delegates? Who is cheating and stealing? You guys are so hypocritical that it would be funny if it wasn’t so sad.
There are no YOU GUYS.
There’s us. You can’t buy delegates, or you shouldn’t be allowed to buy delegates, and I don’t care who you support.
No wonder we’ve been getting such poor candidates since Reagan. They must have done all this thinking, “Never another Reaganite - ever.”
You can’t win a contest of ideas on a technicality. Have the vote. Once its over, respect the outcome.
I don’t know why delegates are essential to this process at all.
