Your vote determines how the delegates vote on the first ballot. If someone has a majority of votes on the first ballot, then it’s over.

I've got a bad feeling that when Trump's delegate numbers exceed 1,237, the GOPe will just change the rules.

That would be a suicidal move, so don't expect that. If Trump gets a majority of delegates on the first ballot, he will win the nomination.

Trump will lose badly and will scapegoat the party and others.

That’s my feeling too. It’s just a rule and they can change the rule since they are the ones who make the rules. They would rather have one of the elites from either party in than Trump.
