Told this on another thread, but if anyone missed it:
In 1984 as a part of College Republicans at UC Santa Barbara, I was invited to help coordinate an “In Concert At the White House” event with Merle Haggard, hosted by Beverly Sills of the Metropolitan Opera. This took place not at Reagan’s “Rancho Del Cielo” (it didn’t have a facility) but at a neighboring ranch.
My job was to drive Sills and Haggard’s band (he came up in a different vehicle) up to the barn where the concert was held. A great honor. I saw Pres. Reagan but was afraid to leap up from my hay bale and shake his hand-—it was before the event started, no one was around, but we had been warned that there were snipers all over because he had just gotten over the bullet wound from his assassination attempt, and I was really afraid of getting shot if I made a sudden move toward him. Missed my opportunity!
Bo Dereck, Ron Ely (Tarzan), Mike Connors (Mannix), and Fre MacMurray were all there. I sat right in front of MacMurray.
LS, fun story! Am very scared of what has been allowed to happen in CO. Perhaps even more repulsed by the reaction of some Cruz supporters here at FR. Have never been more proud of leaving the GOP. Will reserve the rest of my comments to see how it all plays out.
Cool story. The only haybale I sat on was at a New Christy Minstrel show. Sat right in front of the string bass player and flirted with him all.evening. Can you name him for 10 points?
Not nearly as impressive as your experience but exciting for an 18 year old. I followed his career our entire lives
Sham wow!!!!
Great story and super experience for you! Thanks for sharing.
What a great story! Thank you for sharing it this morning...
Great story! Thank you for sharing with us.
Wonderful story!
I too wish I had shook John Kennedy’s hand. YES, wrong Party but I was only in junior high at the time and back then my father was a BIG Democrat and I liked cute guys. LOL John was running for president and was in an open convertible in downtown Louisville. It had started raining lightly but he still kept the top down and I was standing with (not even fifty) young schools girls. If I had just put my hand out I would have touched him.
what a nice story LS.. were you able to get any photos? This was pre digital and I know even though I have scanned many of my fav shots to digital, most were relegated to albums and the common shoe box storage. Yours might be the same
When do you move?
That is very cool!
