Ted Cruz's delegate-hunting operation is running rings around Donald Trump's team, and he's making gains because of it.
In North Dakota last weekend and Colorado this weekend, Cruz's team is out-hustling and outmanuevering Donald Trump, probably picking up a majority of unbound and "uncommitted" delegates in both states.
While Donald Trump still holds the delegate lead in the GOP presidential primary race, his Achilles heel has been a perceived weakness in his ground game. Seeking to capitalize on this, Cruz has outmaneuvered Trump lately in the behind-the-scenes battle for delegates in places that don't assign them through traditional primaries or caucuses.
Enter states like North Dakota, and now Colorado.
Both eschewed traditional primary elections and instead held conventions -- where delegates not necessarily bound to any candidate are selected. Cruz saw this as an opportunity anyway to get allies elected to the slate, banking on their support in the event of an open convention.
The candidate, after picking up more likely delegate allies than Trump in last weekend's North Dakota convention, has been on a roll in Colorado.
Thirty-four delegates are at stake in the convention process, and the Cruz campaign told Fox News on Friday afternoon it has picked up 15 delegates so far in a series of local GOP meetings. The process culminates Saturday at the state convention where a final 13 delegates will be selected.
In Colorado, delegates can pledge themselves to a candidate or run unbound. Those who do pledge only do so for the first round of voting at the convention in Cleveland. The Cruz campaign says the pro-Cruz delegates selected so far are a mix of pledged and unbound but say they will back Cruz in Cleveland.

They talk as if this require some skill to achieve. If insiders are against Trump its pretty easy to get the delegates
UnTwusTED is cheating... Do tell ...
What does sucking up to the GOPe have to do with class?
Ted is taking the process seriously, using his time efficiently, and proactively making contact with the delegates. He is new at this, but probably getting advised by Neil Bush.
Shenanigans such as this remove all doubt about whether Cruz has any principles. He’s just confirming that he is a typical shady lawyer, who cares about winning and nothing else. All his talk of conservative values is just that, talk. There is no substance to it.
No words on Cruz’s huge embarrassment in Michigan. Figures. The press is all over Cruz slobbering like a whore. Oh well I’d rather trump win by getting voters.
Using time well. Haha! That’s a joke. If he was taking this process seriously he would be in New York and other New England states where 200 delegates are up and at least try to not get 3rd place finishes. In 3 weeks, trump will have 1037. Cruz meanwhile has gone from 515 to 537. Yieks!

Paul Manafort, Donald Trumps new convention manager, says he reports directly to Donald Trump and is confident that Trump will have clinched the GOPs nomination before the convention.
Ted Cruz has seen his better days.

Remember this: the Devil always overplays his hand. Rome did it, Napoleandid it, Nazi Germany did it, and now Ted Cruz has done it.— Bill Mitchell (@mitchellvii) April 9, 2016
Why does evil fail eventually? Because it gets cocky and starts to believe it cannot be defeated and it makes mistakes.
I give you Cruz.— Bill Mitchell (@mitchellvii) April 9, 2016
Trump is like a murder suspect who swears he's going to spend all his time and resources looking for the killer, but can't bring himself to get up much of an effort, since he knows full well who the killer is.
ROFL...not for long!!!
LOL !!!
Yeah, he’s “outclassing”
Good old fashioned corruption.
Cruz has fully embraced the (Islam is a religion of peace) Bush family.
Actually Cruz is fluffing any and every establishment elitist he can get close to.
Eagles UP!
Perhaps Cruz is only being Machiavellian. If becoming President of the United States means I have to accept the (artificial) support of the RINO-Whigs, so be it. If elected, he can always write much of his own script anyway.
You wrote: “Trump is like a murder suspect who swears he’s going to spend all his time and resources looking for the killer, but can’t bring himself to get up much of an effort, since he knows full well who the killer is. “
That statement makes absolutely no sense whatsoever, in the context of Trump now learning that he has to protect his delegates and gain the support of uncommitted delegates. What in the world are you trying to say anyway, aside from a senseless nasty dig?
PS: Trump is new to all of this, and has now hired the best. In 2012, after the primaries, Romney found he was being outmaneuvered by the Paul people in the matter of hanging onto delegates, until he, just like Trump, realized he needed experts to deal with this.
“God wants me to be the president ... by any means possible (even if it means cheating and stealing to get it)”
