The shadow battle for Republican convention delegates turns next to Colorado, where a days-long selection process will culminate this weekend -- and once again, it seems Texas Sen. Ted Cruz has the edge.
While Donald Trump still holds a wide delegate lead in the GOP presidential primary race, his Achilles heel has been a perceived weakness in his ground game. Seeking to capitalize on this, Cruz has outmaneuvered Trump lately in the behind-the-scenes battle for delegates in places that don't assign them through traditional primaries or caucuses.
Enter states like North Dakota, and now Colorado.
Both eschewed traditional primary elections and instead held conventions -- where delegates not necessarily bound to any candidate are selected. Cruz saw this as an opportunity anyway to get allies elected to the slate, banking on their support in the event of an open convention.

and we can all thank you when Hillary wins
Only in Trumpbot logic would it be sinful to actually use your God given brains.
Sorry for you, but 4 FABLULOUS talking points, spittin cussin everyone else and flippin the bird (those infamous New York Values) could only get Trump so far, then it actually requires some PLANNING and THINKING.
DONEald.
It’s not me you have to worry about. New polling today: “A third of Republican voters who support Donald Trump could turn their backs on their party in November’s presidential election if he is denied the nomination in a contested convention, according to a Reuters/Ipsos poll.”

How does Cruz overcome that?
exactly, the childish trumpers will take their ball and go home giving us Hillary
thank you trumpies
Trump has to possess something for it to be STOLEN from him.
Being dumb or boneheaded about a process gets Trump to the 2nd DEADLY ballot.
There is no way that Cruz can win Florida against Hellary or Biden. He would win Florida against Bernie.
Cruz lost every single congressional district in Florida (closed primary) and 2,000,000 voters did not choose Ted. In all fairness, I doubt he would get better than 40% of that FL vote to go his way.
Most strikingly, Evangelical Southern Christians did not choose Ted on Super Tuesday. Every other prior Republican nominee has had the solid backing of the Southern states. It’s impossible to win without that block. He would face a very unlikely chance of winning Virginia or North Carolina.
Putting aside regional differences, his appeal to Independent voters is very low. How does that work out for us in a General Election where upwards of 34% classify themselves as Independents?
No, Cruz’s out of control ego will give us Hillary. He’s the one pushing for a contested convention that will cripple the party going into November.
Cruz is a young man. He has decades ahead of him in politics. If he loses big to Hillary in Nov., he will never go further than the Senate. He will be lucky to avoid being primaried in Texas.
Nixon is the only loser in modern times to get a second chance, and he suffered a very narrow, not to mention suspicious, loss in 1960. That will not be the case in 2016.
He doesn’t. It’s impossible.
And even if he had the Republican support, he needs much than that to win. He needs Independent support and he will never get that from those voters.
That block of voters is definitely not looking for a preacher-in-chief. The same quirkiness that appeals to tiny groups of caucuses in a smidgeon of states will be downfall in the swing-states where those votes must count.
Anyone: Name a single swing state that Ted Cruz would have a strong chance of winning.
Contract Trumpbots gotta eat too!
I give you that. Teds really good at handling Trumps delegates.
Cruz is devious. He acts like a thieving coon-badger because he is too pathetic to earn his own delegates.

He takes what he has not rightfully earned.
Once again, Ted has proven to be a religious hypocrite. <-Epic Fail
Yep, I’ve asked several times what is Cruz’s path to 270 coming out of a contested convention, and I never get anything back but crickets. I can only assume Cruz supporters are perfectly ok with him winning the battle but losing the war.
Trump supporters in CO have been disenfranchised.
CO GOPee cancelled the caucus votes back on March 1.
WE THE PEOPLE did not get to vote. Instead, all the GOPee Cruz Cronies have stolen my vote.
I’ll bet you your Contract Trump handler will not pay you that 25cents for posting the same thing over and over. At least try to be original.
Read it and weep Mr. X-spurter. Your weaselin’ Ted will not prevail in California.
In California many more millions will have the opportunity to stand in line and actually VOTE! I bet you hate the fact that these Republicans get to vote and that their voice will have representation? It’s not just a handful of delegates puffing out their chest for a day as if they’ve just been elected to Congress. It will be millions of voters voicing their choice. As in—”We the People,”
In Cali, the presidential candidate chooses his/her own delegates!!! Ted’s gotta hate California’s rules since they reflect pledges of loyalty from the largest delegation in the country with 172 delegates. Californian delegates are chosen by candidate loyalty-not party coerced bribery!
How’s Ted going to weasel the Cali vote? Put the 172 delegates on a one-way bus to Tijuana? Do tell, how will Ted quash the voice of “We the Californians”?
Inquiring minds want to know.
Thanks for the legal update...read it and others many times before!
But, what does this have to do with the battle for delegates in Colorado?
Typical Trumpette tactic...when faced with facts (showing that Cruz is not “stealing” delegates in CO), turn to the default NBC argument...
Stating that Cruz is not a “NBC” until one is blue-in-the-face does not make it so...
As a Free Republic member, why do you rejoice in seeing voters in numerous states disenfranchised?
Why do you prefer for party operatives to choose the nominee?
The California Republican delegation of 172 is chosen by the candidates. It is unfair that Ted or GOPe can not easily wrangle California’s delegates?
Those that can not tie a knot, tie a lot.
Or as Shakespeare admonished,”Thou doth protest too loudly”.
Too bad you hitched to the wrong “train” and your PT Barnum Trump’s façade has now been seen in stark and unflattering light by 2/3rd of GOP voters.
You protest the voice of “We the People” for the uniparty.
Voters having a choice really stinks, eh?
How will Ted steal delegates in California?
Not in the usual way ~ http://www.drbongo.com/play/vbA
Yeah, I know its hard for you to grasp the concept of logical common sense, but here goes my try: it is not possible for Cruz to “steal” any delegates that Trump legitimately wins.
Delegates won in the Primary are bound for the 1st ballot, in most cases. If PT Barnum get’s 1237 on the 1st ballot, he is nominated.
What Cruz can and is doing, is to load the potential delegate pool with people un-sympathetic to Trump, which after the 1st ballot are free to vote for either Trump or Cruz.
What has Trump done since declaring his run? Bashed the GOP, then bashed Cruz and every other candidate that might cost him delegates. Trump has only collected less than 38% of the GOP Primary popular vote, but he has PO’s 2/3rds of all the rest of GOP Primary voters through his uncivil and slanderous antics. Those nasty Trump tactics may have enticed 1/3 of the voters to some degree or another, but now he is at the point where he needs the goodwill of many he has thoroughly alienated.
Now putting back on your reality cap. How does a candidate regain that good will he previously and callously trashed? Fact is he can not and that is where the 2nd ballot delegates come to play.
Outsmarting a smartass by knowing the rules that everyone knew from the start, is not stealing and continuing to whine won’t change that.
