Poll: Hefty Slice Of Virginia’s GOP Will Bolt If Trump Is Nominee

By Laura Vozzella April 7

RICHMOND — Nearly a third of Virginia Republicans will vote for Hillary Clinton, pick a third-party candidate or sit out the election if Donald Trump is the GOP’s nominee for president, a new poll finds.

Democrats in the key swing state are far less likely to defect if Clinton is the nominee, with just 9 percent saying they would vote for someone else or stay home on Election Day, according to a Christopher Newport University survey released Thursday.

Trump’s “loyalty gap,” as CNU researchers dubbed it, could cost the celebrity developer the race in Virginia, where the survey finds the former secretary of state leads Trump 44 percent to 35 percent.

The poll, conducted CNU’s Wason Center for Public Policy, comes just two days after Republicans and Democrats alike expressed dissatisfaction with their parties’ respective front runners by handing Wisconsin primary victories to Republican Ted Cruz and Democrat Bernie Sanders.

The CNU poll was designed to see how that intraparty angst would play out in Virginia if Trump and Clinton ultimately face off in the general election.

“We found a real loyalty gap,” Quentin Kidd, director of the Wason Center, said in a written statement. “If Donald Trump turns out to be the Republican nominee, it’s clear that a very significant proportion of Republican voters will either defect or stay home. But it looks like most Democrats — even those who backed Bernie Sanders in the March primary — would support Clinton.”

Presumably if Trump runs as a third party candidate, that will hand the presidency to Hillary (until impeachment and conviction), but how do the down ballet candidates fare?

Romney was far from perfect, but he was and is a good person who would have been a good POTUS.

Too bad he didn't give a rat's patootie about campaigning...

A fractured GOP is both long overdue and necessary. Short term pain for long term gain. I’ll be cheering as the RINOs take their powered wigs and flee in horror.

If stories like this are true, I don’t understand why the WP and the rest of the Left aren’t encouraging a Trump candidacy at every opportunity.

Looks like you've hit on the hidden truth. Couple this with the polls showing Trump will lose to Clinton (I don't believe this, either), and the Dems and lib media should be pushing Trump at every turn instead of bashing him.

Oh so now you want to resort to blackmail! This has an echo of what Trump is known to do.

Trumpkins trash Cruz in a tsunami of daily postings including what can be described as pure filth using tabloid stuff from the National Enquirer and Larry Flynt sources, to say nothing of the crude pics of Ted Cruz and Heidi, but a story about Trump declining in the polls in a nationally read newspaper or blog somehow dents your soft and delicate bubble-wrap.

Cruz was called by Rush as the most tested and true conservative in the race who has a legitimate claim to Reagan’s mantle. Mike Levin thinks so as well. Ban their posts too??

America’s conservative party shouldn’t be picking candidates or setting policy based on what the idiots in the State of Virginia happen to think.

True. But bottom line is this is an election that we simply CANNOT lose to Hillary or Bernie. That’s the bottom line. At this point Trump has become an albatross. He loses to both Bernie and Hillary by whopping double-digit margins

VA didn’t vote for Mr. Bill. In begging forgiveness, the Old Dominion will go with Mrs. Bill in 2016.

Nearly a third of Virginia Republicans will vote for Hillary Clinton, pick a third-party candidate or sit out the election if Donald Trump is the GOP’s nominee for president, a new poll finds.

This is utter nonsense! Re-do the poll, using rational and intelligent questions...

Perform a "sanity" check on the poll before you broadcast the results.

DC-area “Republicans” are the truest form of RINOs and will support the Mrs. Bill/Castro ticket.

We actually are hoping they do leave the Republican Party and take, Graham, McCain, Ryen, McConnel, and Boehner with them.
