Will: Ted Cruz is surging by design
The Richmond Times-Dispatch ^ | April 6, 2016 | George Will

It’s not the will to win that matters. ... It’s the will to prepare to win that matters.

— Paul “Bear” Bryant

HOUSTON -- People here at Ted Cruz’s campaign headquarters are meticulously preparing to win a contested convention, if there is one. Because Donald Trump is a low-energy fellow, Cruz will be positioned to trounce him in Cleveland, where Trump’s slide toward earned oblivion would accelerate during a second ballot.

Wisconsin has propelled Trump, a virtuoso of contempt, toward joining those he most despises: “losers.” In the 1992 general election, Ross Perot, a Trump precursor, won 21.5 percent of Wisconsin’s vote, above the 18.9 percent he won nationally. Wisconsin’s populist tradition is persistent and indiscriminate enough to encompass Robert La Follette and Joseph McCarthy. And evangelical Christians are less important in Wisconsin than in contiguous Iowa. Nevertheless, temperate Wisconsin rejected Trump, partly for the reason that one of his weakest performances so far was in the reddest state, Utah, where conservative Mormons flinched from his luridness. His act — ignorance slathered with a congealed gravy of arrogance — has become stale.

If, as seemed probable a month ago, Trump had won Wisconsin, he would have been well-positioned to win a first-ballot convention victory. Now he is up against things to which he is averse: facts. For months Cruz’s operation has been courting all convention delegates, including Trump’s. Cruz aims to make a third ballot decisive, or unnecessary...

"UH, I think you are forgetting the 55 delegates of Colorado and Wyoming Stage 3. These are not winner-take-all, but all will be taken nonetheless ---by Cruz. Colorado this week, Wyoming next. Cruz already took 6 in Colorado, will get 3 more tomorrow, 12 more Friday and 16 more on Saturday. Trump: 0,0,0 and 0 again. so before NY, you will have 4 Cruz wins in a row, North Dakota, WS, CO and WY. "

Man Cruz sure does great when it's only the GOPe voting. I'm glad our wise republican masters have made sure that regular people can't vote for our leaders.

Why do you quote Scripture and then support a candidate who is of such a low moral character — dumping two wives for mistresses and being a serial adulterer?

And then Trump follows it up by saying he’s a strong Christian who reads the Bible more than anyone.

You shall know them by their fruits — and Trump has some rotten fruit. Keep eating it.

Friends of mine from Iowa went to the ball in 1989. He wore his miniature medals on the lapel of is tuxedo. I plan on doing the same.

I hope it works out for you to attend a Cruz inaugural.

I want you to know that I GREATLY APPRECIATE YOUR WORK posting excellent articles about Ted Cruz. I get so tired and fed up with the crud served up by Trump supporters. I have enjoyed the past two weeks watching Trump step in more manure than 50 bovines. I have ZERO trust for any man who talked with Bill Clinton before he announced for president. As far as I see it, Trump is the Clintons’ Ross Perot of 2016.

Trump hasn’t won the majority of votes in a single state yet. Most indications are that the majority of people who are voting for other candidates are firmly opposed to them. Trump getting the nomination disenfranchises them. That’s why we have things called run-off elections in many places. You don’t win until you hit 50% + 1.

Trump got a third of South Carolina votes but got all the delegates via winner-take-all. Cruz taking back some delegates where he can in light of that unfair allocation is only fair. Winner-take-all for someone who didn’t even hit 50% is a nonsensical, extremely unfair rule.

Ah yes the old "I hate the formal rules, so I'm cheating to fix it" argument. Reminds me a lot of Bill Clinton. Didn't he have a wife as a co-candidate, just like Cruz?
I bet Cruz cheats at golf too.

Where did Cruz “cheat” and break a single rule?

They talk about how Cruz trounced Trump but it was 12 points. Trump beat Cruz by 30 points in Florida.

So what? Ted Cruz beat tRump by a massive 47 points in Wyoming.

Gosh - ironic how all those who were really pissed at how Romney got the nomination have decided that “all’s fair in politics and F#@k the People”....

Don Trump should have read the rulebooks, because I guarantee you that Ted Cruz did. It’s like a saying lawyers have about the courtroom “Never ask a question you don’t know the answer to already.”

Thanks for all that. I do read my Bible and pray. My motto is:
“Read prayerfully; pray scripturally;
Pray scripturally — all day.”
And that is what I do.

So, thanks for your ministry of correction. I made and observation, as you did. Your Samson observation is apt, as is my Cyrus observation. I didn’t bother to show the flaws in your observation, as that would have been obtuse. All human types of Christ from the OT are flawed, if for no other reason than original sin.

If the goal was winning in November one certainly wouldn’t pick Trump.

There's a question no Cruz supporter will answer:

What states will Ted win that Romney lost?

Trump is a world-class complainer (he is never being treated “fairly”) but a bush league preparer.

And Cruz is a Bush League politician.

At least now I know where all the crackpot theories about Cruz winning at a contested convention are coming from. The Cruz campaign itself is the source. On the outside of the GOPe looking in Cruz's crew is living in a fool's paradise. In a battle with the GOPe Cruz has no leverage to apply, no bribes to offer, no power to dole out. It's just him and whatever loyalists he has on day one. Not even a rat will rally to the Cruz ship as it sinks beneath the waves.

BTW, what states will Ted win that Romney lost?

You are contradicting yourself. You bash Trump for being a ‘minority’ and shouldn’t be chosen, then say all candidates are.

The delegates are mostly loyal to the party. That’s why they are chosen. You said this:

“As it is, the delegates can agree to settle on a candidate who represents the views of the party and combine their vote, and not hand it to a minority.”

You are contradicting yourself again.
