Trump proposes funding wall by cutting off remittances

Donald Trump would force Mexico to pay for a border wall by threatening to cut off billions of dollars in remittances sent by immigrants living in the U.S., according to a memo released by his campaign Tuesday.

The memo outlines how Trump would try to compel Mexico to pay for a 1,000-mile wall if he becomes president.

In his proposal, Trump threatened to change a rule under the USA PATRIOT Act, an anti-terrorism law, to cut off funds sent to Mexico through money transfers known as remittances. Trump said he would withdraw the threat if Mexico makes “a one-time payment of $5-10 billion” to finance the wall. …

“You don’t cut off the remittances you tax them. It will pay for the wall in no time.”

Yes, tax them at 90%! This action would, of necessity. for a lot of illegals force them to go home because they could not take care of their families “back home” with that level of confiscation of their remittances.

Executive Order it would fail immediately because remittances don’t require federal employee involvement,

WRONG,WRONG,WRONG

All Remittances to foreign countries REQUIRE the Federal Reserve Corporation to Exchange said Funds. The Fed is under the Control of the Executive Branch.

The Executive Branch can simply ORDER the Treasury dept and the Fed to NOT ACCEPT ANYTHING FROM MEXICO.

I mentioned it only to show what Mexico is costing us which would be saved. I did not intend to have those savings go to paying for the wall. When we add all the costs to us by the hoard of Mexicans here illegally, the benefits of a wall are enormous. There are some on this thread that ridicule the idea of a wall in the first place.perhaps i should have been more specific. Thanks.

True. It is far less than forty percent. But it is one of their largest ways of getting hard currency. CASH.

As for the exact extent that our porous border helps Mexico. It is certainly to the tune of tens if not hundreds of billions of dollars annually.

The United States acts as a pressure valve for Mexico allowing for their least productive and least educated people an opportunity to earn better than average Mexican wages in the U.S. and send that money back. Every illegal here is not only a potential income source for Mexico, it is also one less mouth they are required to feed. It is a double savings to them.

What are you smoking, Dude?

Mexico won’t have a choice in the matter. If we cut-off remittances to Mexico or levy taxes on them, how exactly can Mexico do anything about that? Vincente Fox can say “No” until he’s blue in the face, but he still can’t do shite about it.

No, it couldn't. If he tried to do something like that by Executive Order it would fail immediately because remittances don't require federal employee involvement, and those are the only people directly subject to an Executive Order.

I fear it's accurate to saw Trump is a borderline economic fascist. Though your points are correct, the underlying concept of too many of his supporters is that he'll ignore or close regulatory agencies, ignore for fire judges, and ignore the laws. And his targets will have no recourse. The whole idea is absurd, it's time he got economic advisors. Competent legal and political advisors too.

Trump is threatening Mexico with such an action which no doubt he could carry out. But he is asking/telling Mexico to send us the money to build the wall. That is a different thing altogether. NOT GOING TO HAPPEN.

At least he is thinking outside the box...and we could always just take it out of the billions in foreign aid that we send mexico, and who knows what it even gets used for anyways...probably bribing and drug cartels.

The Executive Branch can simply ORDER the Treasury dept and the Fed to NOT ACCEPT ANYTHING FROM MEXICO.

For no reason, doubt it, though it's not researching existing regulations and treaties since the issue is remittances going to Mexico, not from.

Most remittances are from illegal aliens who are newly illegal in the US.

To maintain the payments for the Wall, we would need continued or increased illegal immigration, which rather defeats the entire purpose.

Something that sounds feasible but is internally contradictory.

“Its only proper that Mexico pay half the cost of the wall since we share the same border. Its like building a fence between houses”

I’m o.k. with your idea just so long as Mexicans move out of “our house” at the same time.

I think you’re misunderstanding things. It’s not legal for an illegal alien in the United States to send illegally earned wages to Mexico. Trump is not saying that he’s going to seize the money and use it to pay for the wall. He’s saying that he’s going to enforce the laws that would prevent that cash from flowing unless the Mexican government steps up and pays for the wall. There’s $20+ billion at stake, which is a significant part of the Mexican economy. Chances are they’ll quickly back down rather than place their economy and hence their government at risk.

For no reason, doubt it,

All American Remittances to Mexico are suspected of being ILL GOTTEN GAINS from a Criminal Enterprise, and Violate Money Laundering Laws currently on the books, they can be CANCELLED OVERNIGHT

The wall will only cost 5 to 10 billion. A little is all they need.

All this nonsense is just that, nonsense. It is not exactly difficult to get them to pay. It just requires the willingness to do those things necessary to make them pay.

“If he wants to do this, it will take Congress passing a law to that effect. “

Maybe so, but he could also “direct the IRS and Customs and Immigration to “visit the places where remittances” are entered and “investigate the status” of those making them. “May I see your Social Security Card, Green Card, where do you work, etc.” And out in the parking lot, “may I see your driver’s license, proof of insurance, vehicle registration please!”

So Bruce, your idea is to give up before the fight is begun right? Now go vote for Hillary so none of this will have to bother you any longer! People like you are why after 50 years or more, this is stil an “unresolved problem.” I can bring in “legions” who can tell me why we can’t do any of this to change our circumstances, or I can simply vote for Donald Trump with the idea that he will at least TRY to fix things! Sheesh!

That'll last about the time it takes for a court filing. We're not electing a dictator, he doesn't get to arbitrarily "deem" criminal activity contrary to law. I know of two individuals who have electronically remitted funds to Mexico for medical evacuation. You're telling me Donald Trump considers them criminals? I suspect you don't like American companies being in Mexico, nor imports from Mexico, but you can't deem remittances as part of a criminal conspiracy. Nor are remittances from green card holders or American citizens to relatives in Mexico criminal.
