Free Republic DNS entry seems to be gone

I was surfing FR this afternoon and suddenly was unable to access any page on FR and the error stated the server could not be found.

I located the IP address, 209.157.64.200, of the server and then added an entry into my PC's host file and I can now see FR again.

I still do not see a DNS entry for FR, and that is interesting.

Edit the url in your browser as per my prior post, perhaps reloading it to update the browser. Then do whatever your browser normally does to save a ‘bookmark’ or a ‘favorite.’ Browsers generally let you organize and rename such so I named and stashed mine where I’d think to look in the future. Details will vary between browsers and individual filing schemes so I can’t give more specific, yet general, directions.

There I can’t help you. They fixed it too quickly! I went to post my experience and was taken to the login page (my Mac must cross reference internet passwords or cookies by the url and only had the text version of the url memorized.) Rather than dig out my password manually retried the normal url and voila, it was working again. I should try to train my mac to log me in for the IP version too, but will leave that for another night.

I'm on a MacBook Pro via Time Warner Road Runner. While hard wired, my Network System Preferences shows the two DNS Server numbers mentioned in earlier posts. When I had my connection on wireless, I couldn't access FR. Message shown was that it couldn't find the server. This was tried on both Safari and Firefox. While on wireless, the only DNS servers that show up on my Network System Preferences are for Time Warner. When I attempt to add another server, the two for Time Warner are wiped out.

When I connected via ethernet, I can connect to FR on both. With Firefox, when I initially connected via my Bookmarks, FR came right up, and I scrolled through the posts. At one point, when I tried to connect to an older post, Firefox took me to a Time Warner page which listed FR and its link. Clicking on the link took me to FR Latest Articles. There was an option on the Time Warner page to find out:

"Why Am I Here? You entered an unknown web address that was used to present site suggestions that you may find useful. Clicking any of these suggestions provides you with search results, which may include relevant sponsored links. If this service is not right for you, please visit your Preferences page to opt out. At any point in time, you can opt back in to the service by visiting your Preferences page. If you have other questions about this service, please visit our FAQ."

Don't know what the hell that means, but since I use an ethernet connection most of the time, I'll keep connecting to FR that way. Hopefully this problem with the DNS will be worked out, and I'll be able to connect via wireless again.

This will happen with corporate migrations. Eventually, the internet will pick up on whatever new addresses/hops are necessary to resolve to FR. It can take a few days.

As far as a MacBook goes, you want to do the following in the short term:

Apple —> System Preferences —> Network. Highlight Wifi. Click on Advanced. Go to DNS. Insert 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220.

OpenDNS will resolve to FR the right way. Google and the rest of the DNS servers should eventually resolve back to FR at some point in the near future.

It really shouldn’t take that long for the nodes to point to the new nameservers or IP addresses. Larger host sites send an update IIRC, but this may not be the case here.

Agreed. It seems to be very slow rolling out.

This is different from an amended record roll-out. Affected DNS servers have no entry for FR (nxdomain); the domain record has been deleted.

FR is not loading from a lot of ISPs, getting a DNS error message. Open DNS is working. That’s a workaround for Macs.

Frontier user here: unable to log on all day and night and still this AM.

Not a techie but using the numerical address 192 168 1 254 I could access the site but still no log on.

Changed this AM to 50 116 23 211 and now seems OK can do everything.

?? remains whose problem is this and do I leave the new DNS things in?

Frontier customer in WV, got to FR fine last night but this morning found the "Frontier search" result.

Added the hosts file entry per recommendation above and that fixed it just fine.
