FARGO, N.D. Ted Cruzs preferred candidates won the vast majority of convention delegates available in North Dakota over the weekend, taking 18 of 25 slots in the state in another show of organizational strength over Donald Trump.
Its still not clear how loyal all of Cruzs slate will be if the Republican nomination heads to a contested convention in Cleveland, as several included on it told POLITICO they were only leaning toward Cruz, or simply opposed to Trump.
But the result was bad news for Trump, who may need unbound delegates like those in North Dakota to lift him above the 1,237 delegate threshold to secure the GOP nomination this summer on the initial ballot. Only one of the 25 delegates selected Sunday has publicly signaled he might back Trump.
This is a catastrophic outcome for the Trump campaign in North Dakota, said Jason Miller, a senior adviser to Cruz. "Just when you thought the Donalds horrible, very bad, no good week couldnt get any worse, it just did.
The North Dakota delegation has been heavily sought after because they are free agents from the first ballot in Cleveland, able to support Cruz, Trump or John Kasich. State rules do not, however, require to name the candidate they support before being elected leaving their votes in question up until the convention in July.
The selection of delegates came after a hard-fought weekend of schmoozing and arm-twisting, as Cruz delivered a keynote convention address, Carly Fiorina campaigned on his behalf all weekend, and Ben Carson spoke for Trump. Kasichs campaign sent former Sen. Gordon Humphrey of New Hampshire as their top surrogate but the state party gave him an untimely speaking slot after the delegate ballots had been cast.

“You call millions of people coming back into the political process under the mistaken impression that their votes still count, a coup dêtat? “
That doesn’t make any sense as a response to my comment.
Just like your initial post about Cruz running for President shows he is establishment didn’t make sense.
Don’t worry. Donnie will win. He will. It will all be OK. Just think about how much you hate a stupid blond woman on a TV and it will all be good.
"The base" is 28 GOPee party insiders in North Dakota?
Trump was talking about paying off the national debt in 8 years
Even though it might be too ambitious, at least his thinking is of conservative nature
Well Cruz seems to do best when voters don’t actually vote.
You made a comment about "a coup dêtat".
That's a small group of conspirators taking over a government.
SubMareener pointed out that MILLIONS of people are coming back into the political process to vote for Trump.
That's a large group of citizens choosing a government.
It makes ALL KINDS of sense as a response to the "coup dêtat" comment. :)
He will govern like an American, which means ending bad trade deals and controlling our borders.
Wait until next week when NY and Penn. come up, we will see how well Cruz does in those States.
The hunt is on.
Join in the fun.
VIVA LA DORITOS.
What you said.
heh.
Jedi.

"Oh, dear - the peasants have got it into their heads that they have a choice, AGAIN."
Cruz is like that smarmy little creep who knew all the rules of Monopoly when we were kids. He'd only share the ones which benefited HIM.
After a while, nobody would play Monopoly with him - nor any other game... :)
Have a little faith. Think...”SPECIAL ELECTIONS” at the committee level.
Yep.
Jedi.
How do these utter morons write this tripe?
“Catastrophic?” I didn’t have Trump getting ANY delegates from ND, and here he walks away with SEVEN????? I’d call that miraculous and again puts Trump ahead of the chains on my board.
Holy cow. Quote some dipstick Cruzer in every article. I know for a fact that the Trump team is turning cartwheels over this.
On my board, I had Trump getting zero from ND. This is a big bonus.
There'll be a small problem with turnout in November - unless the Plan is for the GOPee branch of the Uniparty to throw the general election to the Democrat branch of the Uniparty.
Last time I checked, each of the handful of people at the GOPee committee level had the same single vote as any member of the peasantry. :)
Unless something has changed...
BINGO
Psssst Here’s a little secret. The Cruz supporters I know don’t hate Trump at all. We just know Cruz will make a better President. We will vote for either Cruz or Trum—unlike the trumpsters who, how do you put it, have “a vendetta and seething hatred” against Cruz and his supporters. When all is said and done , we need to all come together for the good of the country and the appointment of the next SCOTUS judges.
So, the delegates in North Dakota aren’t American citizens? Now I’m REALLY confused!
Trumpsters want desperately to call the game at the bottom of the 7th inning.
Also. where they do get to vote but voting is not relevant. Impressively outdated, rigged, and just generally an asinine “voting” system.
“This is a big bonus”
I agree ... I also have Montana down for zero
