Amir had a prior arrest for slashing someone's face with a knife and a history of drug and mental problems. Perhaps he murdered his mother and the father executed him. I think, in part, police may have charged the father with Amir's murder because they said the mother had been dead for a while, suggesting to me they were not immediately connected in time (no immediate threat).

My theory: The mother was all over the son for being gay. He stabbed her to death. The father came home and was attacked by his son so he shot him.
