Trump can recover from the abortion comment by saying that the question was about if it was illegal would you punish, and there has to be a punishment if something is illegal or else what is the point of the law?
Setting the hot button issue of abortion aside, the problem in Washington today is that laws are being selectively enforced or not enforced at all, and that has to stop. If you're going to make something illegal, including abortion, then you have to back it up with a punishment.
Going further, what if abortion were swapped out for carrying guns? What if the question were instead "If carrying a handgun was made illegal, would you punish someone with a gun?" The same answer that I gave applies.
