Trump aide writes off abortion comments as 'a complete misspeak'

A spokeswoman for Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump says the candidate misspoke a day earlier when he called for punishment for women who get abortions.

"It was a complete misspeak during a conversation over a hypothetical concept and there was a clarification issued," Katrina Pierson told CNN on Thursday morning.

Pierson said Trump is pro-life with exceptions and does not support punishing women for having abortions. Asked whether the businessman wants abortion to be banned nationwide, Pierson demurred.

"This is a state issue, that's the point here, these are states' issues," she said.

Trump drew controversy Wednesday for saying women should be punished for having illegal abortions, a comment that sparked backlash from both Democrat and Republican presidential candidates.

Where’s the outrage at Obama for the countless times he promised one thing and then burdened us with the exact opposite?

All I can hear is the sound of crickets.

So Cruz is now pro choice? That’s breaking news. He would ignore an abortion law and would not punish women who broke the law. Wonder when the media will pick up on that.

That is pretty much an admission that he is OK with it but has to say he is against it to keep the pro life people happy.

Pretty much like saying you want to secure the borders but would not be willing to deport anyone. That position is pretty much pro illegal immigration without saying you are. http://www.cnn.com/2016/01/10/politics/ted-cruz-immigration-deportation-guns-terrorism/

Neither of those are conservative positions, but they are both Cruz positions. Unless the definition of conservative has changed and nobody told me.

Trying to defend Trump by saying he is no worse than Obama is not exactly a high hurdle. Obama is history in several months. What we do not need is Obama's third term, served by someone else.

Whether he “misspoke” or not, Cruz is completely correct when he says he has not thought this issue through. And it’s such an important issue to the GOP, you would have thought that he would have.

Frankly, I am not sure that even his follow up makes much sense. What he should have said is that under the Supreme Court’s current decisions, the answer is “no” since there is essentially an absolute right to abortion. Even if the Court were to completely overturn Roe v. Wade, all that would do is put the issue back to the State level for decision, as it was before Roe v. Wade.

not enforcing laws in place is the policy of the obammi administration.

why isn’t matthews asking obama why he’s not enforcing actual laws as opposed to hypothetical laws?

btw: exactly how much “campaign” money has matthew wife received from the hildabeast??

would like to see chris answer that on the air.

Not trying to defend Trump’s comments, only stating that Obama can lie a thousand times and the adulation of the media continues unabated. We all know the reasons for that. I’m just sick of the “Get Trump” leftist, globalist media that is creating the narrative that he’s the worst man who ever walked the face of the earth.

Trump can misspeak about a critical subject like abortion but Cruz gets raked over the coals about misspeaking about something as simple as his home state. The Trump double standard marches on.

Anyone who feels that way has learned nothing from history and infamous events like Bleeding Kansas. States do NOT have the "right" to determine basic freedoms like the right to life and liberty.

It's not a state issue. It's fundamentally a life issue - does every person have the right to life? Or are certain categories of person not granted that right, leaving it up to other people to decide whether they get to live or not?

Reminds me of a few years ago when certain freepers trashed a Conservative candidate (Christine O’Donnelly if I recall) based on a grotesque story by an obnoxious liberal reporter and a wikipedia page.

Theye were way over the top and they rode the lightening.
