It took less than a minute of playing League of Legends for a homophobic slur to pop up on my screen. Actually, I hadn't even started playing. It was my first attempt to join what many agree to be the world's leading online game, and I was slow to pick a character. The messages started to pour in.
“Pick one, kidd,” one nudged.
Then, “Choose FA GO TT.”
It was an unusual spelling, and the spaces may have been added to ease the word past the game's default vulgarity filter, but the message was clear.
Online gamers have a reputation for hostility. In a largely consequence-free environment inhabited mostly by anonymous and competitive young men, the antics can be downright nasty. Players harass one another for not performing well and can cheat, sabotage games and do any number of things to intentionally ruin the experience for others — a practice that gamers refer to as griefing.

I actually work in video game design for a AAA Studio, and this was pretty interesting to me. Sent it to our research department, will see what they have to say about it

I’m surprised that Heroes of the Storm is tame at all considering my personal experiences with Blizzard games. I saw the infancy of those DOTA style games on WCIII with the DOTA custom game. People would go insane over it, and yell at you, exactly like how this article describes League of Legends. WCIII by itself was bad enough especially on team games but DOTA was even worse.
I do play SCII but the AI is so smart now I don’t really want a human opponent.
I will say, I did start playing Hearthstone against live players and I’ve had ZERO communication with other players while playing them.

That’s because there is no way to communicate with anyone not on your friends list other than 6 canned emotes, which of course are perfectly polite and civil. That said, other players have absolutely no issues letting you know you’re the stupidest piece of $#!+ around with merely two of them, so...
I might try it then. I never knew how to shut off chat in WCIII other than to /squelch someone, so I could live with some canned communication.
Communication is limited on a lot of Blizzard games. That said the big “advantage” to HotS is that feeding has a little less of an impact, so bad individual play is less punishing. I don’t play the game as I don’t like MOBAs, but its a bit milder than LoL where everyone thinks they’re part of a professional team playing for a million dollar prize pool.
I don’t blame you for not playing SC against other players. Those who are good at it are machines. I’ve seen videos of sub 1 minute wins. That’s ridiculous.
I also play HS on my phone. I’m not great at it, I play ranked to about rank 15 each season and then switch to regular play mode. It is a fun game. There’s zero communication in the game against strangers aside from 6 emotes that you can mute, so it stays tame. I’ve had a few people add me as Bnet contacts long enough to call me a racial slur, threaten to kill my family, and then remove the contact, but that’s only happened a couple times, and I’ve been playing since early in the beta.
