Trump walks back statement on women being punished for abortion if procedure banned
Fox News ^ | 03/30/2016

Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump quickly walked back a statement he made earlier Wednesday that if abortion were illegal in the United States, then women who have the procedure should be punished - saying later that only those who performed the procedure should be punished.

“If Congress were to pass legislation making abortion illegal and the federal courts upheld this legislation, or any state were permitted to ban abortion under state and federal law, the doctor or any other person performing this illegal act upon a woman would be held legally responsible, not the woman,” Trump said in a written statement. “The woman is a victim in this case as is the life in her womb.”

Earlier, at a taped MSNBC town hall to be aired later Wednesday, Trump said if abortions were illegal, women should be held responsible.

Host Chris Matthews pressed Trump to clarify, asking him whether abortion should be punished and who ultimately should be held accountable.

“Look, people in certain parts of the Republican Party, conservative Republicans, would say, ‘Yes, it should,’” Trump said.

The candidate later put out a statement saying: “This issue is unclear and should be put back into the states for determination.”

Trump’s comments come at a time when he’s losing traction with women voters.

When asked specifically at the town hall what he thought, the New York businessman answered, “I would say it’s a very serious problem and it’s a problem we have to decide on. Are you going to send them to jail?”

By tomorrow he’ll claim he never said that and his supporters will fall in line.

Basically the same thing Cruz said, but it gets twisted into “Cruz comes out in favor of abortion”

If murder is illegal, the murderer should be punished. I know - simpleton ideas...

So he lied just like he lied when he signed the pledge to support the nominee. No surprise, he only lies when his lips are moving.

Another mistake by Trump. The mother is a co-conspirator. Period.

Mr. Trump, stand up for what’s rights, not for PC. Makes you look look you’re pining for women’s votes. Say and do the right thing and let the chip fall where they may.

Why didn't he get it right the first time? He has to keep re-thinking what he says.

He did tell us that he can be anything he wants us to be.

Donald - oh never mind.

Trump needs to stop answering stupid hypothetical gotcha questions. The truth is the chance of abortion being illegal under federal law is remote at best. If Roe v. Wade were overturned it would be a state issue most likely. Congress would have to pass a law, and whether it would criminalize the woman or just the doctor would be up to the lawmakers. So why ask Trump? Have they asked Kasich or Cruz? Have they asked Hillary or Bernie whether they would enforce such a law? No.

That was a Trumpster who posted that fake headline and called it an “editorial.” It was nothing more than a vanity post.

The disadvantage Trump has is that he has been busy running a business and has not ever needed to delve deeply into controversies and learn how to wiggle around them like politicians do.

If you ever notice how politicians do when asked a question:

1. Introduction - talk in general terms

2. Give a complete historical background

3. Explore yeas and nays

4. Briefly encounter the question on a personal basis and not really say anything.

Trump never knows what he’s going to say until he opens his mouth and somethings falls out. You can see the gears slowly grinding as even he astonishes himself and then thinks, “Gee, I said THAT? What am I gonna do next?”

OK ... let me make sure I’m getting his statement correctly (considering he keeps changing like the winds):

If abortion were illegal, then any woman who has an abortion should be punished... but no, wait - maybe not - only the one PERFORMING the abortion should be punished... ok..

So, let me double-check this with an analogy:

A woman hates her spouse, so she hires a hit man to take him out. The hit is a success, only the hit man should be punished...the wife who put out the hit should not be punished... right?

Then how about we just further apply that to post-birth children of any age... and our health-failing parents/grandparents... they become a burden, just hire someone to take them out... you shouldn’t be held accountable - only the person who does the actual “killin’” should get punished...

Ok - something is askew here.

He shouldn’t because this is the extreme abortion position many Freepers have expressed here, that if it’s a crime, the woman should be punished as well.

Yep. Well, that didn’t take long for him to “walk back” yet another one of his rambling statements.

So he lied just like he lied when he signed the pledge to support the nominee.

You do know that Cruz was on stage before Trump and, when asked, said he wouldn't stand by the pledge. Cruz broke his pledge first, then Trump, then Kasich.

Cruz’s statement regarding Trump’s abortion comment:

“Once again Donald Trump has demonstrated that he hasn’t seriously thought through the issues, and he’ll say anything just to get attention. On the important issue of the sanctity of life, what’s far too often neglected is that being pro-life is not only about the unborn child; it’s also about the mother—and creating a culture than respects her and embraces life. Of course, we shouldn’t be talking about punishing women; we should affirm their dignity and the incredible gift they have to bring life into the world.”

FR is such a weird place. Many claim to be pro-life. But when a candidate actually says that if abortions are made illegal there should be punishment for women who break the law, that candidate gets crucified.

Really dumb.

Seems the TRUTH makes people uncomfortable. I mean, they crucified Jesus for it. So be it, TRUTH ON MrTrump - we're with you!— Bill Mitchell (@mitchellvii) March 30, 2016
