Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump reversed course Wednesday afternoon, saying he would only seek to punish doctors who perform abortions should the practice become illegal again. The statement came hours after an excerpt of an interview was released in which Trump said women should be punished for having illegal abortions. "If Congress were to pass legislation making abortion illegal and the federal courts upheld this legislation, or any state were permitted to ban abortion under state and federal law, the doctor or any other person performing this illegal act upon a woman would be held legally responsible, not the woman," Trump said in the afternooon statement. "The woman is a victim in this case as is the life in her womb. My position has not changed like Ronald Reagan, I am pro-life with exceptions."
The statement directly contradicts comments he made earlier Wednesday, during a town hall interview airing tonight with MSNBC's Chris Matthews.

Now that you mention it, I’ve bashed him a few times over the head for dissing Sarah Palin.
Didn't ya, Durbin? :)
IF it is acknowledged that the person/baby whose own mother is in charge of ending their son or daughters life, at a minimum Trumps response needs to at the very least be discussed.
Everyone talks about woman's rights. What about the woman's right who is yet to be born? Still very much a future woman with tier own body, yet their own opportunity to get to live was shut down my their very own Parent/Mother. A woman's rights starts in the womb. What about the right to live of the future woman? Why does some other woman get to dictate whether another person gets to live or die? It is truly barbaric.
Trump once again says something that is hard for others to hear, but it IS the Truth. Doesn't mean people cannot seek forgiveness, but to say that one woman/mothers rights supersede another woman/her daughters life is insane.
Just like when one Dr is fighting to save a unborn childs life because of any sort of complications . Here you have one Dr fighting to save a life of an unborn in one room, and next door you have a Dr conducting a procedure to end a persons life. These preborns could be the same age and yet you have one Dr trying to save a life and another Dr ending it's live. That is MORONIC.
How is that fair? Trump struck a nerve and while it isn't the law and may never be the law, the mother and father are making a choice to end someones life. Not to say they cannot come to peace with their decision down the road, but the government is definitely playing favorites at this point. One person is more valued in saving their life over another persons, it just depends on their Parents.
If a baby is born and is 1 day old and their own mother tries to stop it's life, the government steps in and says the mother is harming her own baby and will get arrested. Yet if just a few months earlier she says wants to end it's life, the adult is protected but the future person is not? It is very messed up and the LEFT knows they are losing this battle as science catches us with this atrocity. Trump will only GAIN in support after this. PERIOD.
This is a non-issue for Trump as it relates to support. However, this will go against the Democrats. This is going to open up discussion about the arrogance of one woman telling a Dr to end the life of another woman? Why does one woman get to disrupt the life of another woman?
How is it they get a free pass on punishing the women in the womb? It’s not as if their is a plant or a rock or book that is growing in the womb. It is a woman or a man. So yeah, what about the woman in the wombs right? Guess she gets nothing. Why do they get away with punishing the woman in the womb? Just disgusting that anyone would defend this. Political correctness. Deep down people know this is wrong.
Abortion. That is the one hot button topic you dont answer.
Says the Politically Correct.
Political operatives have also said you a candidate should never talk about immigration. LOL
Why shouldn’t Trump answer questions about life? Trump has nothing to back down from. We are talking about actual life of a person, not some random chair or pillow or whatever.
Many of us were never for Romney. That his why he lost.
>>>>Why shouldnt Trump answer questions about life?
I think you have your answer.
I did? That’s news to me.
If you were involved in Right to Life, you would know that NO ONE ever talks about punishing women, nor would we support it if it were suggested.
Ted Cruz couldn't have dissembled any better himself:

Isn't this where FR poster Carly Fiorina jumps in to change the subject, Durbin? LOL! :)
Oh, is that what he did? I wasn’t aware. Thanks for following me so closely.
Can you say President Mondale?
With the easiest "gotcha" question there is, so successful at tripping up Republican candidates it is like shooting fish in a barrel. And Donald Trump blundered right into it.
I'm happy to translate English into Cruzbonics for you any day of the week, Durbin. :)
That seems to happen to him frequently. Perhaps he doesn’t have the mental acuity for the office.
The 1980 or 1984 Reagan comparisons are nonsense self-soothing by Trump supporters.
Because the USA of 1984 no longer exists. There are far fewer white voters today.
Trump turns 70 in June, but I think his mental acuity is probably OK.
His knowledgeability, however, is not. He simply does not know enough about the issues of the day. As a result he gets pushed around by interviewers as in this abortion thing. No half-competent pro-life candidate for State Assembly somewhere would have said what Trump said. Similarly back in the debates, Trump answered a question about the Nuclear Triad that revealed, cringingly, that he didn’t have a clue what that was.
No. But honestly, I have yet to befriend any Right to Lifer with your attitude. I believe that it is a wrongheaded attitude. Many of our most ardent pro-lifers were once involved in abortion in some way, either paying for them, having them, counseling for them. I don’t care what anyone says; unless one is sociopathic, there is great sorrow and angst over the mutilation of one’s own flesh and blood. That’s why the Amy Brennemans of the world need constant reinforcement from the world about the propriety of their horrific decisions.
