He has explained the statement for better or worse.
The bigger issue is why democrats are never asked about their 9 month abortion approval.
Every time an abortion question is asked, the above question should be the answer

Because they have believed lies.

Wrong answer. Remember - the context here is IF abortion was outlawed should women be punished. You argue they should not be.

What they believe is irrelevant. What they know is that abortion is illegal.

So once it is illegal, and they willingly get an abortion how would they still be believing lies. It would be knowingly illegal.

my source is radio news. Trump position is to not punish the woman. He has already issued two clarifications.

Not much of the media is worth a hill of beans these days as they are all in on the PC statist culture so color me skeptical. They lie and deceive so I just don't trust them.

It's amazing how quick you are to try dismiss what would have been the politically incorrect and right thing for Trump to say if abortion was illegal.

FWIW, I can't stand political correctness and it seems to have infected a few here.

Abortion was illegal in 1900 and the woman was considered, by law cited on this thread, to be a victim of the abortion.

I will say that society was more rational, wise and just in 1900 than it is today.

The bloodiest century in all of human history, the 20th, has corrupted so much.

Like Al Pacino said in "The Devil's Advocate"...."The 20th Century was entirely mine.....All of it!"

I don’t know but it does happen. I was a public health nurse, and I can tell you that there are not insignificant numbers of young minor girls under the influence of much older men ( over 21) It is a real and not often talked about problem. So my question stands. Regardless of the numbers, should those exceptions be made?

Only Trump’s future as a viable contender will die down faster.

But in this case it was a pretty lame question — should be there be punishment for breaking the law? Of course. What is he supposed to say?

Exactly what you said. Not what he said -- a lame answer to a lame question.

The problem appears can be summarized as "running your mouth without any serious aforethought" -- something that a Republican candidate simply can't afford to do. You might say that Trump suffers from Todd Akin Disease...

Long late to this party, but I understand what he is saying, and I’m not a big fan. Some women consider abortion a form of birth control. You have that much sex without a raincover and you are going to add some cost to the health care system, aside from the obvious morality issues.

This thread makes me support Trump or Cruz more.

Makes me have a larger perspective on practical ways to make the country better.

Trump is trying to make sure women turn out against him in a general election and for Hillary in droves.

“It’s a shame that so many people can’t seem to understand the basic premise of the wide open question and Mr. Trump’s excellent reply.”

I found this:

Gallup Poll: 55% of Americans Want All or Most Abortions Made Illegal

“A new Gallup poll finds a majority of Americans oppose all or most abortions...”

http://www.lifenews.com/2015/05/29/gallup-poll-54-of-americans-want-all-or-most-abortions-made-illegal/

I’m not understanding why people here on FR are upset by Trump’s remarks. Trump appears to standing with the majority opinion.
