The Real Cost Of “Free Trade” Is Too Great For Americans to Bear
economyincrisis ^ | 3/23/16 | Patrick Kellen

“Free trade” would more accurately be called “freedom for other countries to undercut and destroy American domestic production” because in practice that is what is happening. This is an undeniable fact that should be obvious to any consumer or business in this country. Very little of what is consumed here is made by American-owned companies operating in America. This was not formerly the case, and it was not how the wealth of this country was created.

Proponents of “free trade” justify their position by saying it is supplying American consumers with access to the lowest cost, most competitive market. However, this does not justify the terrible consequences. Proponents dismiss the destruction to American domestic production by wishfully thinking we will find new ways to reinvent ourselves. How will we continue to pay for these cheap foreign goods with no industry to generate our own wealth?

“Free trade” proponents fail to say that free access to subsidized foreign production is destroying America’s chances to be competitive.

The government cannot legislate a pain-free economy for us.

Really, how do you create a new steel industry?

But trying to solve cronyism and over-regulation with tariffs is like trying to cure cancer by contracting syphilis.

A 20% tariff balances the budget tomorrow. Or yo could lower income taxes drastically on coronations. Or both. More tariffs and less income taxes.

As a Free Traitor™ are you going to tell me that free trade has no losers at all? I will tell you that there are loser in a protections system of trade. But there are winners too. It seems you guys ego can’t even acknowledge that Free Trade has both winners AND losers too. You insult our intelligence.

There are always losers. It is a competitive world.

At the aggregate level it is a win. Our standard of living is incredibly high. We are seeing incomes rise around the world which opens up more markets for America to sell high priced goods into.

Again, we aren’t buying BMWs and Hondas because the Germans and Japanese are paying slave wages. We buy them because they are damn good cars and we can afford them.

No let's talks specifics you can't just throw out generalities like that. It is stupid and condescending. The economy is not a religion so quit treating it like it is one.

Concentrated power is evil.

Does it matter who wields it?

The stupidity of libertarians is to think that Big Business Power is any better than Big Government Power.

They are both two sides of the same coin.

When there is an inevitable revolution (which I would rather not have happen), there will be winners and losers, just like in post-Tsarist Russia.

Its a competitive world. The winners will decapitate the losers.

——It is a competitive world.-—

your answer illustrates yet again that your misunderstanding is near total.

The jobs you insist that must be returned never will because of competition. To stay in business and sell stuff, the labor cost had to be reduced

I learned something interesting today. I visited a global American company with lots of work in the USA and out of the country. The company is not truly global in reach but operates in many parts of the world.

to allow the various offices in the farflung locations to coordinate with each other and with customers and vendors they established a central document storage repository in the cloud. all those document clerks are in manila

America thrives by developing and using resources whereever they can be found and established

A 20% tariff balances the budget tomorrow.

A populist doesn't hesitate to raise taxes in order to reduce the deficit.

A conservative would cut spending first.

I have seen -exactly- the same thing posted on places like DU and Kos.

And I'm not surprised at that.

Because we know that raising taxes first, and cutting spending later, has worked so well in the past.

I don’t care about DU and Kos. Blah blah blah. Thomas Jefferson was right. He helped found this countries. Shylocks are helping dismantle it.

The Dems and Repubs are the same. They don’t care about America. Most corps are not American anyway, they are largely Multinational in character. Companies like GE. You know, that company that was run by Jeffrey Immelt, Obama’s Job Czar.

Free traitors ARE traitors to the US just like Obama is.

Left, right, whatever. What do you call A) a person who sells out their country and is right wing? and B) a person who sells out their country and is left wing?

Answer, they are both traitors.

I support small businesses. Not Shylocks, whores, and sell outs.

Also, answer this question: Do you favor free trade with the Islamic State? Shouldn’t businesses have the right to sell Uranium 235 and krypton switches to them?

Because we know that raising taxes first, and cutting spending later, has worked so well in the past.

Not all taxes are the same and you know it. The USA hasn't had a tariff or consumption(sales) tax in almost century.

Thanks to Free Traitors™ like you who killed tariffs in the early 20th century I get a free financial rectal exam, better known as the income tax, every year care of FedGov™.

Small businesses are great American international traders and put the lie to your Free Traitor ignorance

You just plain do not understand business either large or small and what it can and does accomplish every day. There is no real way to enlighten you because you are not engaged and have a terrible vantage point from which to actually observe reality

My dad was vice president of a small company.

I understand business just fine.

You can’t “enlighten” me because I lack your religious faith and devotion to destroying this country.
