Investigating Reports Of 17 Men Chanting, Firing Off Shots In Apple Valley [CA]

APPLE VALLEY (CBSLA.com) — The FBI on Tuesday continued to investigate an incident in which 17 men were detained for reportedly firing off hundreds of rounds in a remote part of Apple Valley.

San Bernardino County Sheriff’s deputies and an FBI agent responded to the scene Sunday morning and detained the men – reportedly all of Middle Eastern descent – who were camping out in the Deep Creek Hot Springs area Sunday morning, authorities said.

A 911 caller reported hearing over 100 shots fired and seeing five to seven men wearing turbans and shooting “assault rifles, handguns, and shotguns,” according to a Sheriff’s Department statement.

A county sheriff’s helicopter located the men walking near a creek with backpacks “and other items”, The Los Angeles Times reported.

Officials say the men were cooperative as they were detained and searched.

Several handguns, a rifle, and a shotgun were found at the scene, but a records check found all the weapons were registered with the exception of the rifle, which reportedly didn’t have a serial number because it was purchased in parts, an FBI spokesperson told The Times.

Police scanner traffic posted online by the Victor Valley News Group described “a large group of subjects wearing turbans and chanting” at the scene.

“They were up all night chanting ‘Allah akbar’-type stuff,” an unidentified officer is heard saying on the audio recording.

None of the hikers interviewed by Sheriff’s investigators say they witnessed any shots being fired, according to Sheriff’s officials.

A photo of the arrests showing several men handcuffed at the scene was posted by the Victor Valley News Group but was not immediately confirmed by authorities.

All 17 men were eventually released because Sheriff’s investigators say they had no outstanding warrants or criminal histories. All but one of the guns was registered.

“There was no evidence found that a crime had been committed by any of the subjects who were detained and they were released,” a Sheriff’s spokesperson said.

The FBI will conduct further interviews with the men to determine if any crimes were committed.

Nearby residents said they were concerned by the activity.

“If there’s something going on wouldn’t you want your local police or law enforcement to take care of it so that citizens like you or myself don’t have to ate it into their own hands?” said a resident, APPLE VALLEY (CBSLA.com) — The FBI on Tuesday continued to investigate an incident in which 17 men were detained for reportedly firing off hundreds of rounds in a remote part of Apple Valley.

Just practicing. Nothing to see here. Move along. But rest assured this has nothing to do with Islam.

I read an account of a guy that was camping there a few days ago. Figured it was a dry run as they could have killed everyone in the campsite before they went into the hills to train.

I’m in Apple Valley a couple of times a month. I’m not an expert on the area, but my impression is this.

It’s a remote area near Victorville, California.

There are parts of the area that is very remote. We’re talking desert area. In certain places you could probably point a gun and not have a soul or structure within ten miles in the line of sight.

The chanting would concern me. That mixed with gunfire would too, especially if you live close to the back of the shooters, or worse.

On the other hand, I can see why the officers may not have much of a beef with the shooters too. It would depend if they were withing the city limits, and what ordinances were in effect.

This may not be as big a deal as some folks might think on first blush.

Pinging both my middle east/terror and outdoors/hunting/camping list to this

Minimal coverage that I saw of this, Worldnet Daily, Breitbart, Inquisitor picked it up. That's about all I saw. Guess it's not news.

My first reaction, other sources described this happening in the Mohave, was that it was in the reserve. Beautiful place, have camped there, and not a bad spot if you want to be isolated. To howl at the moon and such. But it's illegal to discharge a firearm there, though you can possess one. I assumed that's why the FBI was involved.

This article, a local CBS affiliate, describes it as a campground in a national forest. I suspect they're correct. Some of the California people can weigh it, most national forests I've been in it's not a good idea to be discharging firearms in campgrounds. Usually that would be a local issue, or state. Not FBI, unless there were other considerations.

Were they not chanting allau akbar and shooting, rather playing Charlie Daniels too loud in the wee hours, they'd have been cited.

I'm not going to suggest the bad potential outcomes should someone in the area misunderstand their actions. Nor if they'd been 25 miles east chanting and firing at 29 Palms.

Best case, uncivilized, dangerous behavior.

Thanks, I thought I saw it here first but couldn’t find the thread. If you can, link it and I’ll ping this as well. This is very dangerous behavior.

The MSM won’t cover anything like this, it wouldn’t be PC.

Just a group of pacifists yelling Allah Akbar, nothing to see really.

You'd know it better than I, but the USDA shows it as a day use only area. With campgrounds within a few miles. Presuming that's where this happened, as I mentioned other sources described it as the "Mohave", which I took to mean the preserve. If it's a day use area, violation being there at night, and no way you can discharge firearms. California law is a whole other issue. They were describes as firing "assault rifles", I believe illegal in CA, despite the nonsensical description.

I don’t believe California “registers” guns. You can’t buy or sell one without going through a dealer. I would like to know what buying a rifle in parts has to do with being “registered.” The article sounds like like it was written by someone rather ignorant or with and agenda.

While I am not muslim or have any warm feelings toward the cult, I have been known to join a few like minded buddies on the desert and fire a few rounds. A hundred would take us about fifteen or twenty minutes depending on number of participants. In one Saturday afternoon/evening one friend and I have been known to send five hundred rounds down range. We generally don’t count .22LR and BBs however. If we are spending the night and have brought sufficient beverages we have been know to chant a bit. Although it leans more toward Hank Williams Jr.

That, of course, was before the boating accident in which I lost all those weapons.

Dont worry when they murder our families the media will try real hard to find a motive, the candle vigils prayers and memorials will be endless and the government will fail once again to call this an act of terror

all the weapons were registered with the exception of the rifle, which reportedly didn’t have a serial number because it was purchased in parts, an FBI spokesperson told The Times.

Unless this was an 80% build, pure BS - and even if it was, still misleading.

You can't legally buy a finished, unserialed 80% receiver.

The FBI is lying and the Times is stupid. So what else is new?

Alarming, especially after numerous fatal events, carnage if you will around the World with such people screaming “Allah Ackbar”.

Seems to me it’s an event that shouldn’t be dismissed lightly especially as it’s within our borders.

I believe this should warrant a thorough investigation to determine precisely what the ‘H’ these people were up to.

I wondered about that, though my thought was the skill necessary to build it. Also the “registered” comment, CA doesn’t register firearms, do they?

I agree. In my neck of the woods people shoot all the time. Normal country guys shooting is no big deal. A bunch of turbans and chanting? lol who chants while shooting? would definitely draw the long arm of the law if someone reported it as such.
