Seems to me it was a confused and defensive "what the heck are you talking about" reaction in the face of an absurd charge of "assault". I recall the Trump people saying nothing happened. I did not remember them detailing that "I am certain I did not touch that particular person, here is a list of the people I had contact with in the crowded room".
Be honest, you are abandoning common sense because you are too anxious to score a gottcha.
