” but is this just more attractive talk from Trump that really hasn’t a chance in reality? “

How will we ever find out if the topic isn’t discussed? Trump is bringing it up. Are all the questions answered now? No. Does that mean there can never be an answer or movement away from the Saudi Oil? No.

Sometimes things happen in stages. As opposed to Obama and the Dems just shoving new regulations down our throat via EPA.

Patience grasshopper. At least the conversation has been started.

Great idea. When the House of Saud falls to Islamic extremists,

They are the extremists. Ever heard of Wahhabism?

“Yep. And that’s because everyone else talks like a lawyer.”

Sadly it’s because most professional politicians ARE lawyers.

Um forgive my pig ignorance, who buys oil? Oil companies? What does that have to do with the President? What exactly does “halting U.S. Oil Purchases From Saudis” mean? A federal law banning Saudi oil or gasoline made from Saudi oil being sold in the United States?

He could muck the water up by working on imposing embargoes, tariffs, or trade agreements.

And in this case companies like CVX and XOM are probably laughing their asses off at him.

Considering all the butt-kissing of all things Islamic that has been going on I’m wondering what happens if we just stop. How much of that is just to keep the taps open on the Saudi oil supply? I’ve heard that they are horrible about attaching strings to every dealing you try to have with them.

DEFINITELY is more like it and they didn’t get to feel our wrath, I’ll never know why!

I don't know if this is just tinfoil hat stuff, but I read that during the nationwide grounding of all air traffic in the U.S. on 9/11, a single flight was authorized to leave containing some Saudi VIPs.

Then there's this.

I thought that it had been shown on FR in the past that there is no way to effectively do that

You are right, never been done. can't be done, won't be done why try anything that is impossible.

Saudi is pretty far down the list of countries we import oil from behind Mexico, Canada, Nigeria, Venezuela etc.

Actually, I think Trump and you are both mistaken. Petroleum is a very fungible resource, and so if we stop buying from SA, the market flow will automatically shift to accommodate, but everyone will still buy at approx. the same market price.

Incorrect.

Refineries are set you with feed specifications that are set to expected sources. Also take in account coastal refineries that take feedstock via barge, who may not have the same capabilities via pipeline or other transportation options.

Secondly, by eliminating the largest supplier of crude, you have narrowed your sources, and those said sources will obviously charge you more because of your fewer optiions.

I also know the House of Saud was rich enough to buy and use nuclear weapons but haven't done so. If the ultra-extremist take over look out.

It looks like we get 8.1% of our crude from Saudi Arabia circa 2012

Great list but I don’t think any of them had a wallet in Trumps league. Rich as heck all of them though.

You make good points about oil production. I will note only that SA accounts for approx. 13% of world oil production, best I could tell.

And thank you for a serious response and not just a flip answer. What I find attractive about Trump is the "we're not gonna take it anymore" attitude, what turns me off to him is when he get's petty in his insults and responses.

I too find making the Saudis responsible attractive, I just don't see how what he has proposed will happen. With Iran we had other countries engaged in prohibiting their oil sales, but if America is the only one boycotting the Saudis who does that hurt but ourselves? That is why I asked the questions, to hopefully see some reasoned answers, I didn't do it as a bomb thrower to elicit rhetoric.

As I understand the US buys little oil from Saudi Arabia anyway. It goes mostly to Asia/ China and Europe.

I have been screaming about the Keystone pipeline for many years here at FR. Just think if politicians had sense.
