I understand your point but I maintain that Cruz has shaken the confidence of even his strong supporters lately. I think the reaction from Cruz supporters would be much different if this story had come out 6 or 9 months ago. I think it would have been much more of a defense of "No way Ted Cruz would do that".
Another way to look at it is of which of the following candidates would you be the least surprised was a serial cheater - Carson, Jeb, Santorum, Huckabee, Jindal, Walker or Cruz? Compare your answer now to what it would have been 6 or 9 months ago.

Very good point. Cruz jumping on this as a Trump plot is proof that Ted isn't nearly as smart as some claim, he feels cornered and when his emotions are triggered doesn't think rationally, or he's already put his fate in the hands of those wonderful GOPe folks who "joined him".
If it's the last of those possible explanations, his apology to Mr Turtle will come along any day to try and divert his supporters attention away from this.

Well, the one whom I'd be least surprised to learn was a serial cheater is one you don't list: Donald J. Trump. And that's because his history in that regard is something that is well-known and something in which he has expressed pride. As for the others, honestly I have no opinion. As far as I'm concerned, they're all equally likely and unlikely to be adulterers. I've never met any of them. I have no idea what they do or don't do behind closed doors.
