You might be surprised by how knowledgeable I sometimes manage to be.

When Andrew Jackson had such problems, men had the option of making such problems an affair of honor. Andrew Jackson was, in my opinion, the greatest American of his time and possibly of any time. His only real presidential competition would be limited to George Washington (unique as the founding POTUS) and Thomas Jefferson (the single brightest man to ever hold the office). All three had flaws. All men fall short of the glory of God.

In Andrew Jackson's time, men faced with dealing with slanders against their wives had the option of choosing to settle matters with a duel. When an accomplished duelist made scurrilous accusations against Jackson and his wife by claiming that their marriage was bigamous since Mrs. Jackson had previously married another, thought she was divorced by act of a state legislature but had been misled on the failure of that legislature to so act, Jackson and the accuser, an aristocratic young attorney and associate of SCOTUS Chief Justice John Marshall (the dead hand of the Federalist past grasping the throat of the US) engaged in a duel (ca. 1806).

Jackson's opponent fired first and his bullet entered Jackson's chest near his heart. Jackson managed to continue to stand. His opponent was required by the customary rules of dueling to remain motionless while Jackson, holding one hand over his wound to slow the bleeding, carefully drew down on him and killed him. Jackson survived and apparently carried that opponent's bullet in his body (along with other bullets including one fired by Thomas Hart Benton who was later his ally) and suffered associated infections to the day he died.

When Ted Cruz and The Donald meet in a duel putting their respective lives at stake, then we will be seeing the old-fashioned way of dealing with spouse slander. Not until. The Donald running his mouth is not nearly as fearsome as Andrew Jackson or his several opponents in duels wielding even primitive flintlock pistols with homicide in mind.

What is going on between Cruz and The Donald is the equivalent of two school girls swinging their lightweight pocketbooks at one another in a schoolyard spat. OTOH, such behavior should be beneath both of them. They embarrass their respective supporters who retain enough brain cells to suffer embarrassment. They demean the office they seek and the nation they seek to lead.
