Actually, the 2ID had a Marine component during World War I and had several USMC commanders, the only Army division to ever have that.

Well I did not know that, interesting, the 2cd D is a great division with a great history. I looked into the Marine commending officer because I thought that was quite unusal and found this tibit at Wiki.

On 28 July 1918, Marine Corps Major General Lejeune assumed command of the 2nd Infantry Division and remained in that capacity until August 1919, when the unit returned to the US. The division went on to win hard-fought victories at Soissons and Blanc Mont. Finally the Indianhead Division participated in the Meuse-Argonne Offensive which ended any German hope for victory.

Camp Lejeune is the home of the Marine 2D.
