Pennsylvania delegates will go to convention "uncommitted"
email | 3/24/16 | PA GOP

Posted on 03/24/2016 6:40:12 PM PDT by JonPreston

It’s not winner-take-all. It’s not winner-take-most. It’s not even proportional.

The vast majority of Pennsylvania’s Republican delegates are technically “unbound” or “uncommitted.”

Used to be they all were, but this year party rules changed slightly, making 14 “at large” delegates bound to vote for the winner of the PA Primary, but on the first ballot only.

There are also three “automatic” delegate slots for the state party chairman (Rob Gleason), the National Committeeman (Bob Asher) and National Committeewoman (Christine Toretti).

The remaining 54 delegates, elected by Republican primary voters in each of Pennsylvania’s 18 congressional districts (three per district) remain legally “uncommitted.”

They are not bound to vote for any particular candidate and are free to exercise their own judgment in selecting a nominee.

That means there is no guarantee – whatsoever – that the majority of Pennsylvania’s delegates will go with the winner of the Pennsylvania primary.

In short, Donald Trump could win the popular vote in Pennsylvania but lack the organizational infrastructure to fill a slate of delegates who support his candidacy.

Starting to seem unlikely that Trump will be able to pull this thing out in light of rule changes like this.

There’s no clue who’s going to be the nominee at this point.

>>> Why exactly are you on this site?

I don’t think that gloating was his/her point. I think the point is the GOPe control the process, voters be damned.

And what makes you think they are going to let Cruz win when they want Bush?

Actually, Trump won’t need those delegates to clinch 1237.

In short, Donald Trump could win the popular vote in Pennsylvania but lack the organizational infrastructure to fill a slate of delegates who support his candidacy.

So then it's up to the candidate to fill their slate of loyal delegates?

If so, then how's that a problem?

You might want to curb your excitement. They won’t be for Cruz either.

Exactly right, and they’re about to do it again.

Every down ballot Republican needs to be voted out.

I heard 2 on the radio last week from PA. One (PA-13) said he is committed to Cruz, no matter how the voters vote in his district. The 2nd one, from Bucks Co (not sure of the district) said that even though he favored Trump, he was open IF the voters in his district voted for someone else.

I think the worst part of this is the voters do not know who the delegates favor. Gosh, and I voted in PA-13 for 30 years.

Do we know if Trump has made any effort to get his own delegates on the ballot? They might not be bound or publicly declared, but it would certainly help him if he got delegates sympathetic to him voted in. The same, of course, goes for Cruz and Kasich too. I don’t know if they’ve worked on getting their delegates on the ballot either. One would think this would be something all candidates would have already done (as they had to do in Illinois—although those delegates were both declared and bound).

This is why it is very important to make sure Trump folks are involved in the local GOP. I’m going to vote at the state convention and voting for offices in my local committee this year. Its very important. The deadlines are different from county to county many times so check quickly or else you may find you have already missed the boat.

There’s no clue who’s going to be the nominee at this point.

It is becoming crystal clear who the next POTUS will be though.

Only the Republican party could start with 17 candidates, have 10+ debates, and end up with two wounded candidates, a split base -- and rule changes during the process.

At the rate this is going, Democrats will most likely control all three branches of government after November, with super majorities in the Congress and Senate -- even though their front runner is potentially facing indictment on felony charges.

Yes, by all means, let's take down the Republican front runner. That sounds like a BRILLIANT plan!

The party machine controls the delegates unless Cruz or Trump can get their supporters in the 18 congressional districts to support Cruz and Trump delegates who run on the long lists considered ‘uncommitted’ by the party.

Cruz’s campaign asked me to run as a delegate, I’m sure they found three loyalists to be on the ballot in my congressional district.

The trouble is the ballot shows no linkage between individual delegate candidates and presidential candidates.

If the party wins the delegate elections in the 18 districts, they will vote what the GOPe wants them to.

The Trump campaign has its candidates on the lists. They need to get to the voters in the 18 congressional districts to tell them who the Trump people are and vote for them.

Yup. They’ve gone full on scorched earth to retain control of the party. If they can’t have it, then no one can.
