NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — A longtime NFL reporter revealed Wednesday the NFL agreed to a deal where the Los Angeles Rams — then St. Louis — didn’t have to do HBO’s “Hard Knocks” series in 2014 if they drafted Michael Sam.
“Sources say NFL agreed not to have Rams on Hard Knocks in 2014 if they drafted Michael Sam,” Howard Balzer tweeted.
Sam was the first openly gay player drafted by an NFL team. The Rams selected him in the seventh round of the 2014 NFL Draft.
Sam was not shocked by the report.
“I’m not surprised at all,” Sam tweeted.
Balzer reported the NFL was concerned Sam wouldn’t be drafted, so a deal was made with the Rams.
“Rams didn’t want Hard Knocks even without Sam. League concerned he wouldn’t be drafted. Deal made,” Balzer said.

That’s not much of a deal really. All being on Hard Knocks does is show everybody why your team sucks.

I’m starting to tire of the NFL.
Nobody crucified Tebow. He’s not on the field for the exact same reason Sam’s not. Neither can play well enough.
Michael Sam could have been the next Reggie White but the homophobic owners shut him out.
Tragic story.
And conservatives keep losing because they insist on all or nothing and usually wind up with nothing while the left just keeps chipping away at the foundation upon which thsi country was founded.
The Rams coach denied any truth in the story on Mike & Mike this morning. He claimed the decision to draft Sam was totally his with no NFL interference.
LOL - if you draft a worthless queer player, your team won’t have to do a worthless reality TV show. Do they play football anymore in the NFL?
Of course he did, the NFL told him too.
Never heard of “Hard Knocks”...what’s it about and why were NFL teams forced to do it?
It was a $cam from the get-go. Now this comes out. The whole delaying the “coming out” before his senior year at Missouri was nothing more than a $cheme to force the NFL to draft and undraftable player. He and his handlers timed his “courage” accordlingly
“Courage Award” $am The $ham has been exposed as the fraud he is. Now the consequences of his homosexuality are coming home to roost.
I have been told the NFL is “meritocracy only” by many, many sports fans that watch a lot of sports on TV - and who are themselves champion recreational beer drinkers.
Still, this report makes me wonder if Tebow, the wholesome quarterback that won at Denver, was passed over by other teams for less qualified players upon guidance from the NFL leadership.
The league was just one unguarded Tebow comment (”I believe marriage is between one man and one woman”) away from being set-upon by Hollywood, the Democrat party, the lame-stream media, Disney and all the demons in Hell.
Plus, wholesome football players are just . . . just wrong.
He’s obviously not NFL material but don’t minimize his collegiate career, especially his senior year. He was very good and SEC Co-Defensive POY.
It’s a “warts and all” look at one team’s training camp. So far no good teams have ever been on it, and it’s usually unintentionally hilarious. And apparently they Rams are going to be on it this year.
Says more about how poor SEC defenses were that year.
That sounds awful...talk about a team distraction.
