Cruz: Trump's attack on my wife shows his character
Politico ^ | March 23, 2016 | Eliza Collins

Ted Cruz attacked Donald Trump’s character for threatening his wife on Tuesday and blamed his opponent's attack on “a very bad night” in Utah.

“If Donald wants to get in a character fight he's better off sticking with me, because Heidi is way out of his league,” Cruz said on CNN’s “New Day,” responding to a late-night tweet from Trump warning, "Be careful, Lyin' Ted, or I will spill the beans on your wife!”

The attack reveals a lot about Trump's character, Cruz said. "That should be beneath Donald," he said. "The reason he's doing that is because he had a very bad night last night. He got clobbered in Utah."

Trump’s tweet — which began with “Lyin' Ted Cruz just used a picture of Melania from a G.Q. shoot in his ad" — is an apparent reference to an online ad by anti-Trump super PAC Make America Awesome, which used a photo of Trump’s wife Melania posing nude in British GQ in 2000 in an attempt to sway conservative Mormon voters.

Cruz responded via Twitter shortly after: "Pic of your wife not from us. Donald, if you try to attack Heidi, you're more of a coward than I thought. #classless.”

On CNN, host Chris Cuomo asked the Texas senator if engaging with Trump was a good idea.

"The tweet he was unhappy about was not even a super PAC supporting me. It is an independent group. I don’t know them,” Cruz said. "When Donald gets scared, when he gets angry, when he gets threatened ... So last night Donald threatened my wife, he went directly after my wife."

Cruz also ratcheted up his pressure on John Kasich, who fared poorly in Tuesday's contests, to get out of the race, repeatedly calling the Ohio governor a “spoiler.”

There are post on Reddit that have long discussions on that. I’m sure it has sort of always happened in one shape or form but when I read the OP state that he is sick and tired of this “PC stuff in the US”....

“... This smear on Trump’s wife...”

I’m not going on the attack here. I am wondering if you could explain where the ad smears trump’s wife? No-one has really explained that. If nothing else, it was a flattering ad. A sexy picture of trump’s wife that she posed for in a modeling gig. The title of the ad says, “Meet your First Lady”. It ends with “Or you can vote for Cruz”.

“You have obviously never owned a successful business that required government approval for something.”

Good one. True, I am not the owner of this business, but I am intimately involved in negotiations that occur on EVERY continent of the globe. I currently manage about $700-800M in purchasing power.

I understand the implications of high tariffs, for example in Brazil the tariffs are 40% for my commodities. I understand the implications of currency manipulation in China. I understand the implications of the EPA regulations in the US.

Trump’s approach will compound the problems, not solve them. His “paying off” the political class to get things done IS a large portion of why we have a ruling class. Like it or not, he is part of the problem, not the solution.

Actually, I do think that is a fair point. I wish he would just state, “although this ad was in no way part of my campaign, I agree that political opponents should concentrate on issues and avoid attacks on family members.”

Of course, another poster asked me a question that proved another good point. Why do we start with the premise that this ad was an “attack on Trump’s wife?” I am not so sure that it was. That said, I do wish Cruz would come out with more strength and simply say that family members are off limits, so long as they are not part of the campaigns...

I will also admit that I don’t require it tho. He had nothing to do with the “tweet.” I think it is unfair to blame Cruz for it, just like I think it is unfair to blame Trump for the protesters causing havoc outside of his rallies.

Knowing Trump, he will hammer on this and turn it to his advantage. He will dominate the argument when it gets full steam. Poor strategy on Ted’s behalf. Will backfire as everything has. We will have Trump 24/7 saying won’t she make a beautiful, graceful first lady and anyone saying different is hateful and nasty and isn’t for women having rights to be whatever she can and wants to be in a man’s world.

I have to differ with you on “...names a twelve year old would say...”

Actually I remember name-calling at about the 3rd grade. Of course that was many, many, many moons ago. But you nailed Trump’s behavior perfectly—extremely childish. Is this how he would respond around world leaders?

[Trump's] “paying off” the political class to get things done IS a large portion of why we have a ruling class. Like it or not, he is part of the problem, not the solution.

Growing government grows the power of the special interests and their lobbyists.

If one wants to shrink their power, one must first shrink government.

When has Trump advocated shrinking the government? I have heard him talk about “better management” and “better deals.”

The 2 single budget line items that would be the simplest to remove would be the funding for Planned Parenthood and Ethanol Subsidies. If a candidate is not willing to even cut those, then he/she isn’t even considering shrinking the government.

When has Trump advocated shrinking the government?

Never. Nor will he.

Trump's nature is to accumulate power, not divest it.

Ergo, Trump is no conservative. And, rotten as our current governmental structure is, he will only make it worse.

I see him disavowing responsibility for the ad but not disavowing the ad itself.

dis·a·vow
verb
deny any responsibility or support for.

Only if they pissed him off. You know how he is.

I merely pointed out he didn’t disavow anything which is your contention.

And I am correct on that point.

You’re the one bringing in a media play strawman.

He said it was inappropriate and that he had nothing to do with it. What do you want him to do? Open a vein? (rhetorical question)

“dis·a·vow

And you still maintain Ted’s denying responsibility for that ad in that tweet to Trump doesn’t do it for ya? Cruz could launch into a screaming, North Korean-style confession and it still wouldn’t scratch your itch. It really is time to stop with the manufactured outrage. Had Cruz been on the receiving end of such an ad that supported Trump, you’d be twisting yourself into knots trying to justify it. And don’t deny it... you know it’s true.

You still claim this isn’t a disavowal?

If so, WTF do you people want him to do? It’s a non-issue... give it a rest already.
