HIATT: So what do you think Chinas aims are in the South China Sea?
TRUMP: Well I know China very well, because I deal with China all the time. Ive done very well. Chinas unbelievably ambitious. China is, uh I mean, when I deal with China, you know, I have the Bank of America building, Ive done some great deals with China. I do deals with them all the time on, you know, selling apartments, and, you know, people say oh thats not the same thing. The level of uh, the largest bank in the world, 400 million customers, is a tenant of mine in New York, in Manhattan. The biggest bank in China. The biggest bank in the world.
China has got unbelievable ambitions. China feels very invincible. We have rebuilt China. They have drained so much money out of our country that theyve rebuilt China. Without us, you wouldnt see the airports and the roadways and the bridges; I mean, the George Washington Bridge is like, thats like a trinket compared to the bridges that theyve built in China. We dont build anymore, and it, you know, we had our day. But China, if you look at whats going on in China, you know, they go down to seven percent or eight percent and its like a national catastrophe. Our GDP is right now zero. Essentially zero.

RYAN: You [MUFFLED] mentioned a few minutes earlier here that you would knock ISIS. Youve mentioned it many times. Youve also mentioned the risk of putting American troop in a danger area. If you could substantially reduce the risk of harm to ground troops, would you use a battlefield nuclear weapon to take out ISIS?
TRUMP: I dont want to use, I dont want to start the process of nuclear. Remember the one thing that everybody has said, Im a counterpuncher. Rubio hit me. Bush hit me. When I said low energy, hes a low-energy individual, he hit me first. I spent, by the way he spent 18 million dollars worth of negative ads on me. Thats putting [MUFFLED]
RYAN: This is about ISIS. You would not use a tactical nuclear weapon against ISIS?
[CROSSTALK]
TRUMP: Ill tell you one thing, this is a very good looking group of people here. Could I just go around so I know who the hell Im talking to?
>> Chinas expansion has been financed by us thru our lopsided trade deals <<
Not really. For example, China developed the H-Bomb during the 1960’s, at a time when it was illegal for US citizens and companies to trade with China.
That development and others demonstrate clearly that the Chinese don’t need “trade deals” (whatever that term might encompass) to have a strong military and to intervene in the South China Sea.
>> Why resort to insults? <<
Maybe because the leader sets the tone for his followers?
Trump rambled on a lot but I didn't see where he really answered any of the questions addressed to him.
You neglected to point out who you do trust on each issue.
“The buildup in the SCS is military... and that was the subject matter at hand.”
But that is not the key to “defeating” China!!! I know this is tough stuff to wrap your brain around but it is historically true. China has little power militarily compared to us...other than large numbers of soldiers. They are not a large military threat. They are a huge financial threat to the world...it is how they conquer.
“Pretty obvious to me, but then my reading comprehension has always been above average. I suppose if there is a criticism to be made here it is that Trump should be phrasing his replies in simple and obvious terms that can be grasped by the average media type. And a sizable portion of FReeperdom, apparently. :/”
Yes, he really does need to speak in terms the average Joe can understand on matters like this...he does that quite well on other things but sometimes during interviews we see how truly deep his thinking is...and it is tough for many to understand it. I have dealt with some people like him, and have followed his career for forty years so it is easier for me. I understand how it is difficult for most though.
Check my profile page if you really believe that and then get back with me.
It's cute how you Trumpettes try to condescend.
While it is true China's military doesn't match up to ours as a whole, it is far more at an advantage in its backyard if the US -- especially with no major regional bases aside from Japan and Okinawa -- attempted to engage them.
And where did I say the military component was key to contending with China in the first place? If you'll take a moment to actually read my comment, you'll learn that in the context of Trump's interview with the Post, my contention was that Trump's typically rambling response belies an abject lack of understanding of the military portion of the SCS issue, and thus dodged it completely.
You sound like Trump, “winning” and “losing” being the end-all.
FRiend, this isn’t about a trophy. The “winner” takes on a heavy load of leadership.
This transcript shows the depths of Trump’s ignorance. This thread shows the height of his supporters’ delusion. They read into his mostly incoherant responses whatever they want to hear.
A primary is about winning the nomination.
Trump works harder and fights harder and is more in tune with ordinary people, than any of the other two.
You’re probably right about Trump’s affinity with ordinary people. He certainly has the understanding and vocabulary of an average 5th grader.
“He certainly has the understanding and vocabulary of an average 5th grader.”
And Trump uses them and is understood by ordinary people.
Ted talks like a weasel lawyer and is understood to be one by ordinary people.
This transcript was the last straw for me. I liked Trump for a long time, but I’ve become less keen the closer we get to the convention and the less substance I hear from him. I’m not currently located in the US, but I vote like a maniac with my absentee ballot.
I’m out on Trump, Ted Cruz FOR THE WIN!
Our quadrennial personality disorder contest for POTUS is full underway.
Trump is insecure. Has to tell us how smart he is every other partial sentence. The original BMOC - Big Man On Campus. It is very off-putting and likely a big factor is his negatives.
Cruz prosecutes the answer to every question and comes off as a bully. He is not a guy people can warm to. No sense of humility.
Hillary is a congenital liar and self-promoting trailer trash. Nothing but raw, naked desire to have power. She has no desire or skills to lead, she merely wants to lord over us.
Bernie thinks life owes everyone everything with no evidence of rational thought as to how that might be possible in the real world. He’s like a 70 year old man child.
Most disturbing is how many people find any of these candidates worthy of fanatical support. Blindly defending their every act and utterance. As always happens, every one of these people will eventually disappoint and disillusion will certainly follow. Remember Sarah Palin? George W.? Karl Rove?
