Why would anyone want to be collegial or cooperative with a press corps out to denigrate and destroy him?

This is it exactly. The press-whores aren't going to make their bones by writing positive articles.

Their mission in life is to gain Woodward/Bernstein stardom by "exposing" some candidate's "misdeeds" and such.

Look at how they now take ANYTHING Trump says and twist and take out of context. A casual utterance ends up in 20 "news" articles.
