Flashback: Castro Urged Soviet Nuclear Attack in '62
LA Slimes ^

Posted on 03/20/2016 7:41:12 PM PDT by TigerClaws

PARIS — Cuban leader Fidel Castro asked the Soviet Union in 1962 to launch a nuclear attack on the United States if it invaded Cuba, according to letters published today by a French newspaper. The respected daily Le Monde said the letters were exchanged between Castro and Soviet leader Nikita S. Khrushchev during the Cuban missile crisis. In an acrimonious reply, Khrushchev suggested that Castro was irresponsible, since such a war would have killed millions of people in both East and West and destroyed Cuba. Le Monde said Castro gave copies of three of his letters and two of Khrushchev's to French writer Jean-Edern Hallier last month. Hallier then gave them to the newspaper, it said. The first letter by Castro, dated Oct. 26, 1962, said Cuba expected an American invasion "in the next 24 or 72 hours" after the U.S. discovery that the Soviet Union was setting up nuclear missile sites in Cuba. The United States asked that the bases be withdrawn, and historians have said that the week that followed, until Khrushchev backed down, was the closest the world has come to World War III. "The Soviet Union should never let a situation develop in which the imperialists could carry out the first strike of a nuclear war," Castro wrote. "That would be the moment to forever eliminate such a danger . . . no matter how hard and terrible such a solution would be." Heads of state should not be "swept away by the popular feelings of hot-headed elements," Khrushchev replied. "If we had refused a reasonable arrangement with the U.S., a war would have left millions of dead and survivors would have blamed their leaders who were unable to avoid it," he added.

Other statements here about how close we were to nuke war are not exaggerated. I was in New London, CT across the New London River from the Navy sub base. The nuke boats were lined up inbound out twenty miles and exiting same after unloading their dummy Polaris’ and loading on the real deal. This was no show. It was for real. Long story short.

Dad was flying A-4's out of Kanahoe Bay for VMF-214 (Black Sheep Squadron).

His target was Vladivostok. They would've strapped nuke to his jet and he was supposed to drop it on Vladivostok.

If Nixon had been elected President, there'd have been no Berlin Wall, no Cuban Missile Crisis, and quite possibly no Communist Cuba.

Not only that, but Vietnam would've been handled much better.

“My now deceased aunt was an Army colonel and the chief of nurses at Ft. Stewart, GA at the time. She told me once that behind the scenes, all kinds of mass casualty preparations were being made that wold have horrified the public.”

My dad was stationed at a base on the West Coast that would have been a high priority target. He had told my mother something of what was going on, which he wasn’t supposed to. He and some others would have been swept off into some shelters if it had gone hot, leaving us to fend for ourselves.

If it looked like it was going to go they had an agreement that he would call and mention some innocuous subject they’d agreed on, and it meant for her to bug out with the rest of us. Our packed suitcases, one for each, lined the hall. We were told we might be going on a ‘sudden vacation’, and if so to just grab our bag and get in the car. I was very young, clueless, and thought it was great fun. I remember being disappointed when eventually the suitcases were unpacked and put away, and our great adventure failed to materialize. Heh. Never asked my siblings about it. They were old enough they should have known what it was about.

Flashback, 2014-2015...

"50 years is enough , " Trump said in an interview with the Daily Caller published Tuesday, referring to Obama's decision to re-establish U.S. ties with Cuba.

"I think it's fine. I think it's fine, but we should have made a better deal," Trump added. " The concept of opening with Cuba is fine."

How Russia arms America's southern neighbors

Ioan Grillo
May 9, 2014

RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil -- Russia's push into Ukraine has put many on edge. But less known is that Russia is also strengthening its military links south of the Rio Grande and re-establishing itself as a power in the region.

Vladimir Putin has been strengthening military links here, and Russia is now the largest arms dealer to governments in Latin America, surpassing the United States.

Russia has even floated the possibility of building new military bases in Cuba, Venezuela and Nicaragua, and putting its warships permanently in the Caribbean.

In the midst of the Ukraine crisis, Russia's top diplomat Sergei Lavrov recently visited Cuba, Peru, Chile, and Nicaragua, where he announced that Russia would also pour money into the new Central American canal project. ..."

Russia Boosts Arms, Training for Leftist Latin Militaries

Moscow defense minister inks deals with Cuba, Venezuela, Nicaragua for joint exercises

BY: Bill Gertz
February 20, 2015

Russia agreed to provide military training for three leftist regimes in Latin America and increase military visits and exercises following a visit last week to the region by Moscow's Defense Minister Sergei Shoygu, Pentagon officials said.

Shoygu met with defense and military leaders in Cuba, Venezuela, and Nicaragua and signed several agreements on warship visits and military training during the visit, which ran from Feb. 11 to 14. It is not clear whether any new arms deals were completed during the visit.

Defense officials said the Russian leader is seeking bases in the region for strategic bomber flights that Shoygu recently promised would include flights over the Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean.

Such a statement shows how Islam is fundamentally different, and infinitely more dangerous as a nuclear enemy. As bad as were the Soviets, Khrushchev words betray the underlying humanity within the Russian power structure. There is no such corresponding humanity in Islam.

By funding one Manchurian Candidate, they were able to do more damage to America than a nuclear war would do, and without a counterattack.

We should have liberated Cuba right after the USSR collapsed.

The Norfolk naval shipyard was emptied out. Some of the ships had been there for so long they were moored on coffee grounds. The evacuation took place not so much as to head toward Cuba, but to be away from port in case of a nuclear attack.
