This actually fits in with Dilbert creator Scott Adams' read on Trump using hypnosis and persuasion techniques. For Adams, the strongest bond is identity, so Trump attempts to undermine the identity bond between Mormon Utahns and Mitt Romney, who endorsed my preferred candidate Cruz.
It probably won't work, but it doesn't really hurt Trump anywhere else. If I were a Mormon, I'd want nothing to do with Romney or Reid. I'm a Catholic, and if Trump spoke similarly about Nancy Pelosi, I'd cheer him on.
