On Friday, Donald Trump questioned whether Mitt Romney is actually Mormon. “I have many friends that live in Salt Lake City — and by the way, Mitt Romney is not one of them,” Trump said during a Salt Lake City speech. ”Are you sure he’s a Mormon? Are we sure?”
This is the third time Trump has questioned the faith of one of his opponents, despite having criticized the practice of questioning other people’s faith, ABC’s George Stephanopoulos pointed out this morning during an interview with Trump. “Why do you keep doing it?” he asked.
Here’s Trump’s reply:
With Mitt Romney — well, first of all, with Mitt Romney, I was saying to the Mormons, Mormons are very smart people. And I said it in a joking way, but they can take it, you can take it any way you want. The Mormons are very smart people. I know many Mormons. I don’t think Mitt Romney is a smart person. I never have thought he was a smart person, but the Mormons are very smart people. So I said, are you sure he’s a Mormon? And I’m not going to change it because I think Mitt Romney has proven to be not a smart person. As far as Ted Cruz, he’s one of the greatest liars and biggest liars I have ever known. He lies about so much. He lies about things that he shouldn’t be lying about. He lies about things that don’t matter. I tell people, and I think that’s why Ted Cruz has lost the Evangelical vote, look what he did with Ben Carson, who has endorsed me. Look what he did to Ben Carson. He said Ben Carson in Iowa has left. He’s out of the campaign, vote for me.

I’ve argued that exact same point with other Trump supporters on FR, agreeing with and arguing your same position, but it’s a separate point.
So Trump has a lot of good press with the liberal rioters trying to shut him down...then he does stupid sh@t like this.
NOT being a Mormon probably helps Romney anyway—so why bring it up. It’s like Cruz saying Trump really isn’t a liberal. It’s just stupid and a distraction. But maybe he needs more free media coverage and couldn’t think of anything better—and if that’s the case we are screwed.
Didn’t Trump get on the pope for calling him a fake Christian or something like that...so then Trump does something similar to Romney. He’s a loose canon and a nut. Right when he has me coming around he sends me back solidly to Cruz.
Get off it Donald. You aint doing any good on that. Best to point out Romney as the back stabber he is. How he cmapaigned for Carter as a democrat in the 1980 election. How his Ol Man back stabbed Barry Goldwater in the 60s.

As a Trump supporter, I'll agree with you on this point as it regards Romney.
One of those "Republican insiders" shared a story on CNN the other night. The squabble between Romney and Trump has nothing to do with politics.
It is personal, and it dates back to the last convention. I don't remember the details, but those two guys HATE each other. It's visceral, deep in the bones.
That guy, supposedly in the know, said that while he thinks Romney will shut up after the nomination, he would NEVER do anything to help Trump, and vice-versa.
Mitt Romney may be the only guy in America that Trump would let "die in the streets."
This attack on Romney is in exactly the same vein and spirit as calling Iowans stupid, Megyn Kelly whatever: he resents UT for not submitting to him. Childish and hateful worldview of those who don’t wither and genuflect before him in worship... like a good chunk of his supporters.

On March 5th, after the Pope questioned Trumps’ faith, he responded as follows:
“No leader has the right to question another man’s religion or faith”
He should just leave it at that...whether regarding his faith, or someone else’s.
None of these guys can have it both ways on this issue.
I am no fan of the pope. He was a sad mistake by the Catholic hierarchy.
I was just illustrating how Trump takes anything said about him personally and cannot stop himself from lashing out.
